Long narrow room

I'm about to move into a one bed flat with a series of rooms that are long, have high ceilings and are well lit - but are narrow (typically 5.5m x 2.5-2.7m). Due to the layout i can't knock down walls or change these dimensions.

So looking for good ideas of visual tricks I can do to balance the space and organize furniture.

So far I have thought of mirrors and wooden floors running across the width to try and trick the eye. Any others?

Paint the ceiling and down to the picture rail in the same colour as it tricks your eye into thinking the room is bigger. Alternatively you can do the same trick at a lower level by painting skirtings a similar colour to your flooring.

Hi Vicky. Thanks for your reply. What would work best for you is to create a 'hub' area within the largest rooms, as this is where you'll be spending most of your time. With a small reconfiguration - insulating the conservatory, or building into the original footprint of the conservatory (so presumably coming under permitted development) with beautiful bi-fold doors opening onto a terrace and the garden, and putting a steel beam between the existing kitchen and conservatory - you will significantly open up the space you have for a relatively small spend. It will be large and airy, and have great views from the kitchen, through the family room, to the garden - so you can keep an eye on the kids at all times! You will get all the benefit of a large, functional family space while keeping the location of your living room, dining room and back rooms as they are. The new kitchen/family room along with the living room becoming a 'grown-up' snug space, and the back rooms being functional - storage, utility, WC (all running off the kitchen utilities) would work very well for a young family. What an exciting project!

I agree with Alix ie I would use the one end for something else so it seems like two rooms just opened up into each other rather than one long room Perhaps a reading book by the south window? Ie day bed/lounge to chill out on with a rug under it to define that area. Then have your L shaped sofa facing towards the tv/fire in the North side. Shame you have the door right in the middle but it can still work as long as you don’t block it up too much. What other rooms are around it? Whole plan would help

Your kitchen is gorgeous! Ours is similar in layout and darkness. We went with f&b Dimpse for the cabinets as it’s very light. I’d love a lighter worktop too but can’t justify replacing perfectly good granite. Likewise we have dark flooring (slate) - I’d love a parquet floor but again can’t justify scrapping something that is perfectly ok. We’ve painted our walls pure white and it’s fab. (And cheap). Photo not the best as it was taken at night - however the wall and cabinet colours have most definitely lightened up the whole room.

Michelle, Jojo. Thank you both for your helpful comments and advice. We are going to make a decision and order the bed this Friday. When the bed has arrived we will look further into building a partition wall and see if there is enough space. Michelle, the lights are from bolia.com, they are called “balloon” and look even nicer in person.

Paint the small end walls a dark colour to make the room appear less rectangular.

Hi,

You could paint the ceiling and part of the walls to make the rooms appear cosier. Alternatevely, you could install striking wallpaper on the ceiling and paint the walls in a dark colour. Something along these lines...
