Blank canvas lounge? Wall colour advise needed asap

I have shown a picture of my sofas and the carpet is a dark grey. All woodwork is white? I am clueless what colour? It's a very large room. Any help guys?

If you're only interested in colour advice, I'd advise using Farrow & Balls 'All White' or 'Cornstarch White' this will provide a great contrast against the grey that you are using for furniture and the White woodwork. Also, keeping your natural light bouncing throughout your room.

Hi Shelley

Your room looks lovely - very light and airy and I love the architectural details!

I love using a slightly deeper colour on walls that have exquisite skirting boards and coving - I actually think it looks really good in the colour of the plaster! Alternatively if you want a lighter colour, a warm white or grey would look great too.

I've put some pics below of the kind of effect I'm talking about with the slightly darker neutrals.

Your best bet is to get some samples and paint them on big sheets of card *not the wall!*, place them in the room on different walls and see what they look like at different times of the day, that should give you a pretty accurate idea of what the whole effect will be once it's all done. Look forward to seeing some photos of the completed project!

P.s. I reallly do love that coving...*sigh*

Now that you've decided on your balcony, I just found that you had another design dilemma.... Cream and grey definitely go together. I think those floors are pretty groovy and, especially as you are on a budget, I would try and work with them. Have a look at this one They will also be practical in the kitchen and a carpet will break up the space too much. And you can always do carpet later on when you are loaded :) I would re-paint the walls as that cream colour looks quite yellow based in the photos and so doesn't go with the grey or the countertop. You could still do cream, if you want to keep it neutral, just a more appropriate cream. Most professionals recommend that you do wall paint colour last. This is painful but sensible. Sheer curtains and a nice rug would tie it all together, but I'd wait on this until you've got your main bits in there. I'll try and find some examples of colour combinations and styles and you can see if you like any of them.

I would leave the fireplace as is, it's a feature of the room. If the rooms are small I would paint up to the picture rail and leave above in white. Something like elephants breath by farrow and ball could work for downstairs. Invest in some statement lighting as it make a room and also a stylish sofa. Look for secondhand furniture, mirrors etc on ebay. Depending on your style, you can always makeover any furniture yourself. If the kitchen cupboards are paintable then i would do this. If you don't like the kitchen as it is now, I would make a feature of the back window wall as your eye will be drawn to this. The diy shops have some good and cheap wallpapers in at the moment. I recently did a quick "tart up" of my basement utility room. I love tin tiles but couldn't find them in the right size in the uk so I bought turner tile anaglypta wallpaper (about £10 a roll) and then painted it metallic silver which looks great ( I think!). If you're keen on using copper this might be a cheap idea. I would just focus on getting the basics done now and then accessorise as budget permits.

Hi Amanda you have a big enough garden to rearrange everything,what about putting the shed on the right hand side of the lounge patio door side as you can get a shed made to fit or have some one build one for that space for bikes and tools etc. You could have a lovely size patio going from the kitchen straight across and leading to the lounge area, A patio path leading down to the lower part of the garden with areas to sit and have a canopy for the kids to play under made from timber or metal which are reasonable to buy as a kit form. You could have some raised beds plus a planting area or rock feature you could have a wall with a water feature it all depends on your budget. I am at home tomorrow i will try and spend an hour and do a quick 3d design for you to give you more ideas Kind regards dean.
