Need help updating tired, outdated brick ranch!
We have recently renovated the inside of our 1950's ranch/rambler, but need help with the exterior! We have new windows (with white trim as opposed to the off-white pictured), we have a new black door and have painted the shutters and railings black since these photos were taken - the garage doors remain maroon. We don't have a large budget, but are contemplating painting the trim/siding white, the garage doors either black or white, updating the lighting, and improving the landscaping. I would love to paint the brick white, but am concerned about the upkeep. We have also discussed adding a portico or porch (ideally) down the line, but there are egress windows from our basement to the right (facing) of the front door, which makes a porch challenging! Any photos, suggestions, ideas are welcome!

Comments (14)I recently painted my mums pine units and it looks really good. I used Dulux primer and ivory satinwood. Changed knobs to pewter ones, and removed dated tiles (not that difficult) and replaced with classic white metro tiles. The worktop was replaced. Howdens do a great range of melamine type worktops which look really good and don't cost a fortune. I do agree that a light worktop would help lighten your room. Duck egg blue can look fab even in a north facing room. I I rather like Dulux Light & Space Paint in Ocean Ripple - the paint apparently makes a space look brighter. I've used it in my spare room and it is lovely. Your kitchen is actually rather nice isn't it, just needs a bit of a facelift. Comments (80)While white fencing isn't for me in a back garden, I have seen loads of pics here on Houzz with white fences and, although they mostly seem to be over in the USA (let's face it - they tend to have better daylight in parts of North America than we do in the UK) I do like the look of it, though. I especially like the whitewash appearance if you're going for a Cottage Garden as it adds a weathered appeal. I went for black in my garden which looks pretty stylish, especially with the greens and whites in front of it. I used to live in a house with a roof terrace and we were advised at the time to not use white on the inside of the parapet walls as it would glare too much. The chosen option for the wall was pale grey (before it was fashionable) and it worked really well. Comments (16)The space under the house doesn't look to be that accessible, so I would block it in as Johnathan suggests, just leave an access hatch for inspection and clad in stone to match the existing stone work. For the exterior I would continue the cladding using a composite like fibrous cement or UPVC with good insulation underneath and finish in a dark colour. Comments (23)Following on from my post some time ago we have started the hard landscaping part. We have decided to extend the patio at both sides. We have the maple tree one side so there isn’t much we can so that side but I am hoping to have my outdoor table on the other side. My dilemma is the platform/patio is about 4ft above the lawn area. With a toddler I’m trying to make it more child friendly. I’m wondering if there will be too much of a drop off the patio onto the steps? I’m planning on having a lower level planter below the patio. Hoping that will soften the fall if someone did rum off the top of the patio! Or do I build a narrowish planter to run along the edge to stop kids going off the edge!! 6 years agoWhy don't you post a photo with your updates so we're on the same page? Agree with removal of your shutters and the old shaped landscaping. You might consider doing German Smear on the brick. Here's a before & after ofit on a brick similar to yours.

Okay, here are some updated photos - sorry for not posting them originally. We clearly need to do something with the side of the house/garage doors. Worth painting the siding? Or maybe just the trim and doors? Thank you!!

6 years agoI am all for painting the brick! I would paint the house and trim this combo (BM Revere Pewter, P&L Pebble Gray) - Would take down the shutters as well.
