What is this fireplace made of?

Hello, we are planning some renovations to our house and I'm using Houzz to gather ideas. Am struggling to find any photos of fireplaces similar to this one, does anyone know what it is called or what it might be made of? The house was built in approx 1933. I would love to know what material it is made of, I'm wondering if it's some kind of sandstone?

This is almost definitely sandstone. Yorkshire sandstone is quite yellowy beige so could well be from a local quarry. There are dozens in Yorkshire.
Are you looking to reproduce it or just for the history.
Do your deeds have the architects name or builder's name. It looks in keeping with the original build.
There are Arts and Crafts houses by designers such as Edgar Wood around West Yorks with similar looks.

Banney Royd in Huddersfield is a good example. Open to public now I think.

What a beautiful fireplace. Obviously natural stone, but no idea what type. I'm so jealous!

It gets pretty darn cold up here, in N Yorkshire and when the fire is lit, it really does warm up the room (whilst the rest of the house is like a bloomin' ice box!) Hello again Bespoke Decorative Finishes, thank you too for your kind words. Ah, the gold mirror is from ebay - thank you again. Yours is beautifully done and so clever and sophisticated; mine is a bit 'rustic' but I think ok for the room, in probably a very basic way, which has limestone flags. When I first came to the house 8 years ago, the previous owner had built the fireplace out in the same stone as the back of it to 1.5 metres on both sides of the fire, projecting forwards into the room. I thought it was pretty hideous because it was was way too big and dominating and it also seemed to absorb the light as it is not a well lit room. So I borrowed a jack hammer and over the weeks, in the evenings, I took the stone walls down which stretched about 70cm each side too. It was a bit task and I took out a lot of stone. Then I found the two RSJs. I think I said on another post, I couldn't understand why there were two, one on top of the other, so I took one out. BIG mistake. The room above is my bedroom and I noticed when I went to bed, the floor had dropped by 4". Ooops!

HI Sarah I love what you have achieved. Many congrats for embracing what you have and creating something that totally enhances the placement of the fireplace. The space looks like it was made for the placement of that perfect chair and you've done a gorgeous job with your selection and placement of art . I am moving with considerable grief from my gorgeous arts and crafts bungalow to an early1970s small house. I have to say this style of architecture in NZ wasnt exactly a highlight. But I set myself a challange to embrace the architecture and look to enhance rather than fight it . That challenge shifted me off my despair track and now I am excited and hopeful and thinking about space and colour and the amazing light pouring in (a quality of houses of this time)..and textures . i feel so cteative in new and diffetent ways...and it's so exciting. seeing what you have achieved - it is very affirming for me I love what you have created.

Hello Nicola E, How you treat the paint work entirely depends on what you want to stand out.. The fireplace or the wardrobes.. This too depends on what else is happening in the room... If just a bed then it's entirely possible to create a feature of said wardrobes by painting them a bolder colour or the chimney breast a darker colour.. Look at the room and consider what you'd like to have as a focal point and how big the room is.. Shades of cream and off whites are far nicer than white.. So if you decide to include a white scheme, definitely look at shades of off white and creams.. Little Greene has a lovely range of chalky colours.. such as Whitening, White Lead, Stock etc.. These can be chosen for wood and walls.... They give a warm, chalky and sophisticated look which can blend beautifully with colours such as Celestial blue or James just to talk of blue and these are warm not cold blues .. I also like Juniper Ash which is a slightly mauve colour but look for warm versions of a colour you like.. So if the fireplace is to stand out and the wardrobes are a pale creamy colour the accent and focus is the fireplace which will benefit if the room is smaller than you'd like.. If you have a large bed then this might be the best way to consider it. If the room is large and you want something to create a statement then consider the fireplace and wardrobes.. A shade or two darker for wardrobes than chimney breast will create a frame surrounding both the fireplace and for the bed if this is facing on the opposite wall.. Blend the bedding and cushions, should you choose them into the scheme to create a cohesive and stylish finish. Lastly if you want a pale room with painted wardrobes these will form a statement and frame if you have less in the room... : )) Blended.... Contrast... This one isn't a bedroom but you get the idea..

Hi, thanks for the replies :) it seemed too smooth for sandstone but admittedly I'm not an expert!! The house is indeed arts and crafts, built as part of an estate by a man called Crowther. It's all in very good condition so doesn't need replacing, just wanted to know so I can intelligently search on Houzz for similar fireplaces! Thanks again ☺️
