Help with kitchen!!!

Hi everyone, I need serious help livening up most rooms of my house but will start with the kitchen!!! We really need to paint walls and freshen everything up. we have four small kids from 1 to 6 years old so the house has taken a beating! We are tired of the kitchen we have but can't afford to change it. The cabinets aren't real wood. Could we paint them? change handles? we are sick of the floor tiles too and the splashback ones. Is it possible to paint the floor? Any suggestions for wall colours? Any advice would be so gratefully appreciated!

I think it is the creaminess of the units and the yellow walls that look amiss. The floor tiles and wall tiles work well together and go with the worktop. There are companies that can just replace doors and drawer fronts onto an existing kitchen. A cooler mid grey and pale grey walls would work.

Hi,

I don't think the worktop or wall tiles are highly offensive. If you are limited in terms of budget, here are a few things id consider:

- change the unit doors to a colour and style of your choice, a light grey or maybe a stone coloured compliment the wood effect worktop.

This allows you to change the overall look of rhe kitchen without having to splash out on a new one or having to deal with the hassle of painting one.

- Whilst the wall tiles really not too bad, I'm not a huge fan of the floor tiles. With kids, your kitchen does probably have high traffic, thus wearing away the paint if painted.

I'd therefore consider cover the floor tiles with lino in a stone effect or wood effect. It comes very cheap and allows you to change the flooring to match everything else without causing much destruction.

Lino is soft to the touch and works well in kitchens If laid properly.

- lastly I'd paint the walls to freshen up the space.

Homebase does some great porcelain tiles - Luna. The beige (also available in black but won't recommend) one will work well with your units I think. You can use the 300x600 size for the wall and the 400x400 for floor. They are not expensive at all, we paid only around £12/m when we did our bathroom in the old flat, hope the photos below show. Be aware they are very difficult to drill though. The word porcelain says it all! :). For the splash black though, it's been my dream to have a coloured glass one, any colour will go well with your neutrally coloured units. So if you managed to save a bit on floor tiles, I'd use the savings on glass. All the best!

If its a dark room then reflective surfaces will help .. but maybe step back and look at the style before you introduce colour? The detail on the doors make it a bit dated for an ultra modern look, but a vivid color would change things up, where pastels and neutrals may feel a bit samey ! The granite top will cool anything down ... my suggestion is change the flooring and get the doors spray painted Red!

As mentioned by the others, having tiles and upstands together would look rather bizarre. I’d suggest removing the upstands and adding white or dark grey tiles. You could also add white tiles with dark grey designs to maintain the colour scheme that you’ve got going. Tiles would also be much easier to clean, and if you choose dark grey tiles, any stains wouldn’t be visible at all. I recently got my entire kitchen redesigned with the help of these kitchen fitters called Saturn Interiors. They took care of all the minor and major details, so I didn’t have to worry about any of it. If you want to, you could consult with them about this issue. I think they could provide you with better solutions too.

Hi. It really depends on how much you can afford to spend on this project. I think the units and wall tiles are smart. A good quality padded Lino floor will be practical, cosy and update the room. I rolled my eyes at having Lino flooring but it's warmer, easy to clean and is available in many designs - I love mine. With the neutral tiles and units, you could opt for some bolder colour on the walls - maybe light blue or a rich plum?

thank you all so much for your replies. Those are great ideas. I hadn't even considered link as still traumatised from the awful lino in our kitchen at home in the 80's! I'll definitely look into it now though as I think you are right about the painted floor getting damaged. thanks so much again for the help!

Linda - even though they aren't wood, you can repaint those doors and fit new handles/knobs. Use Zinsser BIN shellac based primer, then go over with a decent, tough oil paint. Hard work, but not too expensive and a new color will really change them.

If that floor is perfectly level, you may be able to lay an engineered wood floor over it, if you use the correct underlay and are willing to lose a bit of height in the room. Best option is to replace the tiles though really. Messy, but not too awful a job.

Lino is very often looked down upon but you really can get very nice designs and it doesn't break the bank at all - can be laid on your existing tiles so minimises the mess and labour costs.

Thanks for those replies. I will look into all those options. it's great to get honest advice and I am allergic to those times at this stage! Getting excited about the project now!!
