Hi, Meadowside -- the roughness of the brick will still be OK with taking paint; however if by "whitewashing" you mean doing just a thin coat, you may find that the dark mortar shows through quite a bit. Painting it completely should work; you may want to use a masonry paint and apply it slowly with a large brush.
You say it dominates -- is removing the surround completely an option? Replacing it with a smaller surround, or even just having a woodburner would transform the room.
