Laminate worktops... white or wood?

We've decided on a cashmere shaker kitchen from Howdens but stuck on what to have for worktops. I would love a white based stone but can't justify price as we may well move in a couple of years. Real wood is lovely but I just don't think the upkeep would suit us and knowing the messy habits of my family I can see the sink area being all black and mouldy before too long!

If anyone has any alternative suggestions it would be greatly appreciated as I feel a bit stuck and don't feel particularly confident on my interior design abilities. I'm leaning towards a good quality laminate but can't make up my mind which looks better with a cashmere shaker style. Flooring will probably be a wood vinyl/laminate if we go white, or maybe a beigey/Cotswold stone style vinyl if we go with wood effect.
