Need advice on hallway and stairs flooring please

Hello,

I have a problem with my hallway and stairs. I live in a flat that has its own front door. I have a hallway downstairs and then a staircase up to my flat. Once upstairs you turn straight right onto a very narrow hallway that runs the length of my flat.

The question being can I put down wooden flooring along my upstairs hallway but then have carpet on the stairs? (I would also have wooden flooring on the downstairs hall). I'm not sure about how the carpet would look finishing on the last stair rather than continuing along the hallway? I would rather not have carpet in my top hallway as the amount of traffic and the ease of keeping it clean (runners are easier to replace)

Any advise would be helpful?

Thank you
