Sash windows
Comments (14)Your windows do look fine for now, so I agree with the other houzzers, leave them and replace them when they need doing. (Just from an eco-point of view, it's better to replace them when they need replacing, rather than before - though I guess you could sell the old ones for reuse?) I have a similar dilemma, where the original style windows in my home have been replaced with (fairly horrid) PVC numbers. However, they are still okay, don't leak or mist, so the plan is to leave them, save up and WHEN they need replacing, rip the lot out and splurge on the best bespoke timber replacements I can afford (which will be even better as I'll have a bigger pot saved up!)....See MoreReplacing a window with door (same width) - what is involved?
Comments (4)Hi Ellie, You should have a lintel above the existing window already and therefore if the door is the same width as the window then you shouldn't need to replace this. You will need to consider the damp proof course of the house (depending on the age of the house) and where that sits in relation to the new opening for the door. If you are taking away bricks below the damp proof membrane then you will need to add extra under the door. You will also need to think about how the water sheds off the door cill. A good installer will be able to advise you on this. Unless you are in a listed building or a conservation area where article 4 has been applied by the council you shouldn't need planning permission for this....See MoreTiling round window / past countertop?
Comments (7)Thanks for everyone's comments. This is really helpful and so nice to get such constructive and thoughtful comments. This is our first major project and builders got us to first fix and my husband is doing the rest of the work himself (kitchen, bathroom installation, tiling). This forum is exactly what it's all about - design advice and solution solving from those that have been there and done it. You're right Victoria - in an ideal world we could have had a higher windowsill (we're not keen on the counter top running into the window sill) but so hard to get every measurement spot on when you're planning a kitchen when the extension is just a shell. We're getting there though and really pleased so far. Just interior design and 2 bathrooms to go!...See MoreKitchen upstand around a window
Comments (7)I honestly don’t think it would look odd by having a section cut out around the window at all. I would just use it on the cill and if the window cill depth is similar to the upstand, then this could go into the recess as well so visually when you look at it, it’s all the same height. Mock up with something ie paper etc and see what you think! It would, however, look weird building the cill up so you can’t see the bottom of the window frame (unless you are replacing this anyway of course??) as the height from the top of the window would be different to the bottom and that would stand out more ......See Moreacew1234
