Part of the problem is that I don't know exactly what it is called, and it seems to have different descriptions on different sites, so searching the web is proving frustrating. Basically, it is a bracket for attaching the end of a rail to a sloping wall or ceiling. Ideally, I would like one in brass. I have found a picture of just about the exact thing on this site here, but have had no luck in finding a UK retailer. I like the look of the hanging pendant lights but do think it will be a passing trend. Not least because of the practicality issue of non-directional light that you've already mentioned. I used wall lights in the spare bedroom to save surface space on the small bedside tables. They're only cheap £16 ones from IKEA but I think they look nice all the same and they swivel so you can use them directionally. We needed plug in ones which limited our options but I covered the white wire in grey electrical tape to help it blend with the wall colour. In case anyone comes back to this thread, I ended up buying standard chrome fittings and had them gold plated by KRT Gold Plating. They were a dream work with and very happy with the results. krtgoldplating@gmail.com
