Double Fireplace Advice

Hi

We have a double sided fireplace which goes between our kitchen and snug. at the minute both sides are open but we want to close the right hand (when looking from snug side) slightly as this is where we will be putting the tv etc. We don't want to close it all the way to the top. We just want something that when your looking at where the TV is form the kitchen side that you cant see the back of it. Thinking about kids pulling wires if it is exposed.

Has anyone seen anything like this before?

No, never seen that. Also wondering about the heat of the fire affecting the TV. Can't the TV go on another wall?

Hey thanks for your reply. No the heat should have no impact as it is just beside it and not above the fire. Well it's actually a double sided pot belly stove. No there isn't another wall as there's very large windows and patio doors on the other walls!

I personally like the brick fireplace, but I can see the need for a mantle. If you don't like the brick facing I would maybe clad the two sides and top with a steal, maybe stainless but probably something a little more rustic, this could then appear to hold the mantle which I would do in a reclaimed oak or something to match the shelves in your living room. I would then remake the shelving to the left in the same material, possibly add lighting and a little shallower, I would also add a modern log basket, I agree that shouldn't touch the stone as it goes through the rest of your home, by the way the rest of your home looks great!

I think solid hinged doors will be sturdy and a bit more soundproof than the current ones. I'd aim for a design that you can open all the way whenever you want to have the two rooms connected.

Hi Samantha I know you said about not mounting the tv on the fireplace wall but there's actually some pretty clever stuff you can do with this and make sure it doesn't take away from the stone/whatever finish it is. It's definitely the most natural place to put it as blocking off one side of the fireplace will create imbalance and just won't be as practical to be honest. See below for some inspo... Maybe the climate of where you live comes in to play here? If this is a fireplace that will be lit a lot, especially in winter, then I think it could be a nice addition. You would be able to see it from the kitchen, lounge and dining area. However, if it's just an occasional thing, then I wouldn't bother, as I side with Jonathan on preferring the open space through to the back of the house from the front door.

I have to say that I don't like how they've done it. It looks very heavy and crude, imbalanced. But I was thinking that you could perhaps use oak, like the beams, and white to make it a bit lighter and keep it free from the floor, so you could use the space under it for wood storage if you like. So wanted to sketch that for you, but hooray... found the perfect image of what I was thinking...

Perhaps you could use the kitchen side too and have some shelves for cookbooks for example

(And I did understand you wrong the first time. Don't know why, but I was thinking that you wanted to partially close the actual fireplace opening, not the space beside it. Strange, I know :-) )

What a beautiful space! You could indeed build out at the side, as suggested by Carolina, above. Alternatively, you could mount the tv on the fireplace. It's perfectly possible to do this, and it can look really good. A third solution would be to house the tv inside a tv cupboard to the side of the chimney breast.

Do you think it would look strange if we didn't plasterboard the whole way up to the ceiling like in Carolina's picture?
I had never thought of a tv unit I must see if I can find any pictures of that

Depending on where you get your kitchen from, they might be able to build you a cabinet that perfectly fits in there in the style of your kitchen. Just brainstorming...

Samantha, if you search for tv or media armoires, you should be able to find some examples. You may have to customise an existing armoire, or you could have one custom built by a cabinet maker.

This is a customised armoire. TV in the top section, all the gubbins (satellite box etc at the bottom).
