Curb appeal. Garage doors and entrance pillers

My dilemma is whether to change garage doors to a wood grain look or stay with the white doors. I would like to update the look of the front entrance and garage. I hate the pillers at the front entrance. I wonder what we could do to update that part of the house. We installed all new windows this summer. We have a new entrance door which has not been installed yet. It is walnut six panel look with full window sidelights. Please advice.

Wood look garage doors would look fantastic with your new wood door. I would absolutely replace the pillars with square posts, and place an over sized planter in front of each post.

I agree, you need to beef up the pillars as shown in the picture and make them more square (craftsman style). I like the idea of adding new garage doors that look like the front door but with paneled

windows. A garage arbor would also add some character and interest to the curb appeal.

I would not paint the garage brickwork - painted render looks fine but painted brickwork can look tacky and gives you a permanent maintenance job. I wouldn't clad the upper storey either, future buyers may wonder what you have covered up and see a problem where none exists. I agree with alant1000 about painting the bottom half cream or white, and repairing the wood trims, moving the burglar alarm and either having a rnew or painting the front door. If you like gardening and don't need all the parking space, include a garden area in your block paving design. If you need the parking, then add a few pots and plant them up - perhaps put them under the front window to give colour and draw attention to the entrance area. Good luck!

A lovely sized bungalow! I think the problem here is that the scape seems to blend into one and there is no focal point. A coat of paint to the render would work wonders and I agree with the other comments to add in and change the current shrubbery. If you have chance to change the doors, I would suggest a colour other than brown, with so much roof space the brown is very overwhelming. I would also suggest some outside downlighting against the render. Good lighting can improve the look of any home. This doesn't have to be expensive either. Hope this helps and good luck

Hi all, Thank you so much for all the helpful comments and suggestions, and sorry that it's taken me so long to respond - house renovation and work have been keeping us on our toes! This has become a long post, so a quick reminder - we were looking to renovate and rewire our 60s house to update it and also make it more wheelchair friendly downstairs for when my mother-in-law comes to visit. We employed an architect and came up with what turned out to be an 'aspirational' design (much more than the budget!) so we ended up deciding to split things into two stages: Stage One to add a downstairs wetroom for accessibility, remove chimney throughout and add a porch Stage Two to do the extension across the rear, removing the conservatory to open out a large kitchen/diner and add a utility room The layout below shows both Stages One and Two as complete. Bits shown in red are existing walls which have been/will be removed (apart from the wall in red in the seating area below which is between the existing kitchen and dining room - that's a mistake). So.....the building work is now done - hurray! Stage One is complete, we are much poorer, and we now need to decorate the whole house :-) Some before and after photos below - please bear with the terrible photography skills. The rooms aren't big enough to allow for expansive photos!: We've re-plastered throughout, apart from in the kitchen and upstairs bathroom, as we'll deal with those later. Current challenge is deciding how on earth to pick paint colours and flooring throughout.... Anyway - hopefully that gives you a sense of where we've got to. Best wishes

Before removing the inner door and changing the Porch door, i'd check to see if the Porch wall is thick enough to become the only 'outside' wall. Most of those porches were built as entrances with porch across, therefore, the walls are for the most part not thick enough to have cavities for insulation etc, thus you may make the house cold by removing the inner door. I would re-instate the door as it would have been built, more like the one above. You could also think about extending the porch, along Jonathan's idea above. Or make the whole thing more prominent right across.
