What colours for an outdated living-room?

Hi! We bought that house that's never been looked after. The walls are dirty and yellowish that makes the entire place look old. Since the layout is a bit strange too, I am struggling to determine which colours should I use and on which walls. And which extra wall decorations can I use to make it really appealing. Thanks for your kind advice!

Looking at the photos the house looks well cared for although it does look like a bit of a squashed lounge! Are they the only 3 living rooms? Could you open them up a bit? Is this your furniture and are you planning to keep or replace it? What kind of styles and colours do you like?

Thank you for your reply. The living room is a big room with a wall in the middle that makes the area look small on one side and open where the TV stands. That's why I tried to give a 360° view of it. We can't take the wall down because it is a bearing wall and there is a chimney on the other side. It is our furniture right now but they are old, bulky and the colour don't fit. White ones would probably give the room a nicer feeling. I am not keen on too much white for the walls. Beige/Cream/Brown would fit. But which colour to apply onto which wall? Especially, the wall behind the TV carries on up to inside the kitchen. :(

If you're going to go with an all white look I always recommend that clients consider using a 'silk' paint. They really bounce the light around, and don't become dusty and yellow/grey over time as matt emulsions usually do. As a side bonus they are wipeable, so no need to repaint an area if you make some marks - just wipe them away. Very practical. My clients who are listing their homes for sale often repaint to freshen up the place, and the winning combination of colours that sells homes seems to be: Base color: Pure Brilliant White - Silk | Accent Color (and hallways): Polished Pebble - Silk The combination is fresh & clean looking and goes with almost all decorative styles. :)

Hope this gives a rough idea showing the duck-egg curtains, white tv units and the piano with the sofa almost the same kind of dark brown colour, plus the light grey carpet. The walls are currently in magnolia. I had a thought after posting the question, perhaps having one wall in blue would look a bit strange so thinking if I choose a light-med grey for the wall behind the TV and the wall behind the sofa, then an even ligher grey colour for the two remaining walls (around the window and the wall behind me). This way we sort of let the curtains be the focus of the room? (sorry currently the room is too messy for a photo so I had used an old one masking the family and window view) Thanks!

It depends on what else you have in the room, the sofa colours etc. It looks to be a really nice room with some lovely features. Personally, I wouldn't paint it all a blue or a dark colour as East facing rooms can be gloomy on an afternoon. Have a look on instagram, there is a total shift away from dark interiors towards more neutral warmer ones. Not that this matters, but perhaps a year of lockdown has made a difference to what people want to live with.
