Design Dilemma Living Rooms

Furniture layout advice, please help!

So we have moved house, and our very oversized sofas, which fit perfectly in our old house, look ridiculous! I am shopping around to replace them but with the layout or the room, I am struggling to decide how/where to place furniture. The fireplace dominates the rooms, and the location of the doors means that the traffic flow is straight through the middle. The room feels chopped in half! Moving doors/windows/tv is really not an option, so I am basically just trying to make the best of what we have. Does anyone have thoughts/advice, on chairs, settees and how/where to place them to make the room flow and feel better? I would be massively grateful.... Thanks for reading!

The ideal situation would be to move the door, however, if this isn't an option I've created a brief layout of how you could position your furniture and change the swing of the door to create an easier walk through.

Assuming the door opens fully, I'd be tempted to have it always open and tucked behind the sofa (pull it forward slightly). Or if you need it closed in the winter, just keep it always closed. Then you could stick basically with your layout, with the chairs pulled in and centred more on a large rug

Hi Katie. I do like the furniture you've chosen, as I said previously I would personally struggle to arrange furniture on a flat ŵall without corners, alcoves etc! I think it might be an idea to create a new post so others may be encouraged to respond without reading through previous comments. It may potentially work if you were to move the tv unit to the right. Have a floor lamp to the left of the unit and the chair angled in front of the lamp. Perhaps have a long piece of art or set of 2/3 to the right of the tv with maybe a plant stand or something and then the chinese cabinet. Do play around with the height of things though. I know you've looked before but I really think you need an area rug to zone the living space. Re kitchen not sure of your current thoughts but have you thought of a peninsular coming off that right ŵall within the kitchen? If you were to move the dining table perhaps a couple of accent chairs and table for the bay to keep your husband happy?!

That's a pretty big space that could be utilised in various ways to suit your needs. The way we work ( we don't sell product - just design ) we'd go through a detailed questionnaire with you via email or on the phone /FaceTime etc and then offer up four of five ( sometimes more !) alternatives in sketch form, then work with one - or elements of each - that you have chosen, to come up with a solution that works to suit the family's needs and the space you have. It's a bit more involved than just putting furniture in the space, as its tailored to you and your wish list ! It takes from a Monday to the Friday - and we keep you in the loop, as part of the process, and the finished design and item listing then allows you to shop around for the best deal. For a project this size - our fee would be about the same price as a good dishwasher ! So in proportion - not much of the budget overall !! With the shape of the room, it may be that your furniture looks better when not against walls so that you bring it into the room more room almost trick the eye and for it to feel a more square room. Using a rug will really help to zone the space. I think your arrangement is good given the circumstances, and makes the room feel large. One suggestion to add to the comments above - keep one of the French doors into the dining room closed, so that the sofa doesn't "hang" into the opening.

I agree with kI55hp, and you may try and change the TV to the wall where the door is and place one of the sofas under the window and the other one on the wall where the TV was. This will free up the middle point. Also why don't you remove the door completely? or may be not??

Thanks Chesme I think removing the door would be a great improvement, will give that a try and see how it feels. Thanks for your suggestions
