Should I paint this 250 year old oak beam?
Comments (47)Karin, thanks for your suggestion . The bricks surrounding the fireplace and forming the canopy are over 200 years old and each one is handmade. Although you can't see from the picture, each one is unique with different shading, sizing and surface markings. This style is very traditional in the part of France where we live. Where we can, we are trying to restore and retain the original features of the house. If we painted the bricks we would destroy something that took a craftsman almost a month to restore . The bricks had been cemented over at some point in the last 50 years and we rediscovered them when we restored the fireplace . Many of the original bricks couldnt be saved so we toured salvage yards to find authentic replacements. The entire house is over 250 years old so each room and every feature in each room has a different story to tell. The roofing timbers for example came from the hull of a ship and date from about 1700. When the ship was no longer in use the timbers were salvaged for the roof. How they got them here is a mystery. We are 150 km from the sea. That's a long journey by horse and cart....See Moreneed advice for my living room paint colour

Comments (33)White or pale walls are ok, DOn't feel that the only way to decorate4 is by painitng the walls. Decide if you want white on white scheme, or a pop of colour. If so, cushions and curtains are the way to go. Decide on a colour and stick to it. TRy the 70-20-10 rule where your 70 is white4 (your walls) and 20 is curtqains and cushions and 10 is a secondary colour such as gold or silver for hardwaqre and ornaments and presto you're done....See MoreWhat colour should i paint my walls?
Comments (20)This look would be rather timeless and easy to re-use when wanting to change styles and colour schemes. Keeping a rather neutral palette, which is what you've gone for is a good idea for the kitchen as to not age so quickly. With the use of colourful accessories and well chosen lighting I think this space could look fab. If you hadn't already chosen your units and had them fitted, I'd have recommended a slightly darker shade to provide some contrast, and a slightly lighter island colour. However, I wouldn't recommend darker walls, purely as your space although being a good size and having some natural light. It's not flooded with it, so wouldn't want to makes the space darker than necessary. Hope this helps! Let me know. :) - Kerry @KerryBryanInteriors...See Morerhirhi88
