What practical feature/item do you secretly crave for your house?
Comments (98)Lights which automatically turn on when I enter a room (especially in the kitchen and in the hallway from the bedroom to the bathroom) and lights inside my wardrobes (especially inside the one in the bedroom: I often get up earlier than my hubby, and it may be still dark outside, and I don't want to wake him up while I'm looking for my stockings)....See MoreWhat are you glad you put in your kitchen, and what can you do without
Comments (123)Thank you for everyone's comments, had no idea this thread would prove so popular when I started it. We are plastering this week and we have finally bought most things for the kitchen. I did find some real 'finds' though if anyone is looking. Not sure where you are based, but regarding electrical goods we researched all our own and narrowed down our list, and once we had that we looked online for the best prices for each appliance. Instead of buying from lots of different places we took it to Bentalls, who not only matched, but also cost us less, and beat some online prices with a good 'deal' price they also then will hold on to them until you need them, but if anything goes wrong you have 'bentalls' rather than several online dealers to return items to. RDO Appliances also do this if there is one near you, but i'd advise you to research prices first. Another thing we found was inserts for the kitchens. Through our kitchen supplier these were expensive, bin inserts, pull out drawers, pull out larders, even the pop up sockets, sourced seperately through ebay and online we managed to save quite a lot of money by doing this, so our fitter will still have the right things on the day, but we are not getting the inserts from the supplier. What else..... erm kitchen worktop, unbelievably the exact same worktop, same material, same cut outs etc.. same sizes differed between suppliers by 3k! so do shop around for your quartz and granite....See MoreKitchen island hob and sink
Comments (9)The other luxury of doing it the way I did is you can have a double sink, as well as gas and induction hobs. Amazing for a keen cook (like me!). Seating on the other side of the island means that people are naturally drawn there to sit and have a drink and chat/help whilst I cook, rather than being in the cooking area. Dishwasher is on "my" side of the island, to the left of the sink for easy loading - and again having the door down means I block off access to that end, so am not bothered whilst loading. Effectively I've zoned off a cook's area. There's also a cook's fridge on that side of the island, so that I don't have to go anywhere once I am in my zone...ovens are also there, so I feel pretty self contained wven when the kitchen is full of people....See MoreSink of hob in island unit
Comments (8)We regularly position hobs and sinks to suit different circumstances - for example - in Heathers kitchen the hob suited the island better as they were social people and cooking and entertaining were a key part of the whole room design. In Carolina’s kitchen it was more a bank of tall storage on the perimeter wall with a long peninsula that was ‘where it all happens’ as that suited that whole room area, and their family. In my own kitchen my island is purely for prep and the cooking and sink are both on the perimeter walls ! If you cook really fragrant food - then lots of people who do prefer to vent straight outside via a wall - but sometimes you can vent strait up though a flat roof ! So no one size fits all. It’s s combination of what suits you and your building and circumstances ! Either way - a designer worth their salt will discuss lots of things with you to get the low down on how your kitchen might best work safely, efficiently and to suit you and your family!...See MoreDaisy England
