Would you convert your garage into an extension?

The traditional ‘Garage’ seems to be going out of fashion, as homeowners are realising the potential of what might otherwise be used as dead space. A typical garage spans 3 x 6m, which is a huge area, especially when you consider how the space could be used within your everyday activities.

Why not tell us - What would you use the new space for? A yoga room, extending the kitchen out, or another bedroom maybe?

We convert many clients garages into Cinema's. It creates an idea space for quality family time. Normally we leave barn type doors at the front for storage and then build Cinema into the rest of the space (depending on how many people they want to seat)

We would advocate for keeping the garage but making the most of the storage space it offers. Most homes, especially newer ones, don't have the storage space that we all need and so our homes become cluttered. Having a good storage option for the garage can help with that, and sometimes you can even keep your car in it!

Hi Just Add Popcorn Limited. That is such a great idea. We like that you break up the space into both storage and entertainment.

Garageflex - That is also very true, storage space is very valuable, especially in newer homes that are being converted substantially. In this case, a combination space sounds like it could be the best of both worlds for some homeowners!

We are in the planning stages of making our internal double garage into the kitchen, and the original kitchen, which is half the size, into garage type storage at the front and separate utility at the back.

Hi emgoodfellow, that sounds like a really interesting and practical design and it's great your still able to keep your storage area, just by shifting the layout of the ground floor.

emgoodfellow, we think this is a great use of the area. We would always recommend putting as much as you can on the floor and ceiling to keep your storage floor area clutter free.
