What shall do with this fire place ?

We are thinking about moving this leaving room and probably create a kitchen/diner ?What shall I do with this fire place ?How can I update ? Is it expensive to take it down?(the room doesn’t have another ventilation system as next to it is conservatory?Please help

I think you'd need a builder round to see if there' an RSJ above it. I can't see enough of the fireplace to see if it's an open fire, log burner or just an electric one put in a Chimney that's just been placed there.

You'd need to know if it's a supporting structure.

Costs depend on, whether is'a s supporting structure, if there are Chimneys directly above it, which would need supporting if you remove the bottom.

I doubt it's original, but the size of the room could indicate that it is partially a supporting structure.

We do have a Steptoe's up here not far from us but it's (dare I say it) wretched! Dark, not clean, badly organised. The one near you, though, AMAZING! We go down every year and take two big cars (we have a Picasso and our friends who live in Devon have a Forester), lol, fill them to the brim every year:) Last year we ended up shipping a lot of it back to Scotland as otherwise we wouldn't have got us, the luggage, and the Roo in to go home!

I personally do not like TVs over a fireplace. I know it’s very popular but they are not good for watching TV as they are too high and can cause neck pain and headaches. I wonder how many of those people visit the doctors complaining of neck and head pain! A TV should be at eye level or below when you are sitting down. Also wouldn’t the heat from the fire cause possible damage to the TV? Have your fire by all means, but the TV is better on a low unit on one side of the fireplace, depending on where your sofas are placed. Don’t discard electric fires. There are some really nice modern ones available and you just plug in and go. Here’s some examples.

How odd to put carpet in a fireplace. I would suggest you made a hearth with a piece of stone - sandstone or slate or even tiles maybe - then you can dress it with candles, a pile of logs like Rukmini said, or a fire grate (loads of secondhand ones on eBay) and dress that with logs. I rather like the example below with a cluster of plants. You could also try an electric faux wood burner as minnie101 suggests. They are reasonably cheap (£100-£300) and most have an option to switch the light on without the heat if you so choose. Dimplex is a well known brand.

Seek advice from an expert. My advice would be to rip it out, knock down the conservatory and build a proper garden room in its place. Could be an amazing space.
