Tips for hanging pendant lights (height)

Our electrician wants us to choose the height for our pendant lights: (a) three small pendants over a kitchen island; (b) one large pendant over a sitting area

Are there any tips to help? For example is there a rule of thirds or something?

I don't know of any rule, just wherever looks good and is practical. Do you have a picture of the fitting?

You can always take away, but it's difficult to add on......

Google has also been my friend this evening....

Hanging over a kitchen island, designers' tips range between 55cm-100cm off the surface. But most seem to favour 70-85cm, so that the pendants provide functional task light without blocking two people looking across the island at each other, nor so high that they glare into people's eyes

Hanging in a living/sitting room, the tip seems to be between 5 feet and 7 feet. Lower end of the range for more of a statement and/or if there is furniture below and little chance that a person will walk under the light.

Our electrician is coming tomorrow morning......

Hello Stella, Okay.. Well I would say that you could have pendants given the size of the room and if you're not having overhead extraction on the island for example... Also there are many other things you can do with an island that doesn't necessarily involve lighting at all.. You might want to hang your pans for example.. It's not a prerequisite to have lighting here. Interested to know what the Tropical garden window splashback is.. but don't forget a pendant can be a cluster configuration of a single drop. They look really gr8 at differing heights and 3 or 5 could be fantastic. In this way you can actually create something bespoke.. Things to consider are that beautiful bulbs that can be a feature in themselves... Scale... Large expansive, vs smaller. Then textures as this can create interest... Also colour... can you pick out the splashback somehow.. You can do this kind of thing with 1 ceiling rose and multiple outlets.. Have interesting cable and hooks... For other ways to illuminate which I can shed some light on... : ) ) no pun intended are wall lighting.. consider something more interesting than a spot or the usual suspects.. : ))

Hello! This is a really stylish pendant light and could look great in a living room but please bear in mind the type of light you will get from it. Firstly, it will cast a pool of light straight down which, on its own, is neither flattering to the room nor the people in it. Accompanied with accent lighting such as wall lights or lamps, it could work. Secondly, unlike your cotton shade, the bulb will be more exposed and therefore not ideal if above a sitting area. Try a pearlised or decorative bulb at a lower wattage to avoid glare. Hope this helps Jennifer

Hi Victoria, It would not look odd at all, if anything it will add to your kitchen. Just make sure you choose a pendant that is adjustable in height. Here are some options. I would agree with ED but do you have the space behind the ceiling for downlights? If not, I wouldn't choose a colour for pendants, go for something in glass so they don't visually fill the space. Or maybe consider track lighting, that would probably work quite well? The kitchen is looking good btw

Hello there!

I have made the chandelier bespoke for my customers in Manchester on this ongoing project, which is 4 meters long.

In terms of pendants, the standard cable/chain height is 1 meter and the electrician can shorten the cable according to your requirements.
