open plan dilemma
Comments (18)I think if you go back to the other post, where the kitchen was at the top, it demonstrates why that's better. The front door is no longer right in the middle of the lounge area. The lounge / dining area is much larger and sits in the space better. At present, although the kitchen is really nice where it is, bottom left, it compromises the lounge area, and it gives the biggest available space to the dining table. It's just not the best use of available space ( in my opinion ). Arranging the whole space around the idea of having a window in the kitchen really spoils the entire layout. When everything was considered on the other post, this layout works best for everything, Lounge, Kitchen and dining area. I think you could put in a cupboard from left to right by the door, but that compromises the light in the kitchen. You could also build another wall to screen off partially the kitchen from the rest of the apartment - Have an American style Fridge Freezer there, and, maybe a coat cupboard opposite. However, I do feel that as you've pointed out before, there are only two of you and you have three bedrooms. Why not turn one of the bedrooms in to a dressing area, with ample room for all coats and shoes, then you wouldn't need to try and put too much in the main living area....See Moreneed help with planning an open plan kitchen/diner/living space
Comments (3)I meant that you had drawn a run of units that was 20’ long and you could likely get a great kitchen into a smaller space, leaving room for dining. Attaching a dining table to the island is a stylish look and often helps people with insufficient room. Personally though I would prefer the flexibility of a freestanding table that you can extend....See Moreto open plan or not to open plan?
Comments (5)Looking at the strength of light in the conservatory, I’d suggest investing in larger crittal style doors to conservatory might gain you more daylight into the dining area. Then, having a large opening into lounge area takes that light further into lounge too . But changing the fireplace to between the two areas ( like inspiration pic) would change the dynamic of the lounge room - so needs careful consideration- and we’d need more info on room size, furniture size and aspect of house to further comment on if it may work or not. Keeping the kitchen/breakfast room separate to dining room might mean that you can redesign kitchen to include more cabinet space and maybe bar seating for less formal meals . An opening with doors to dining from kitchen could be useful if you have formal dinners often. It’s a generous sized home and in my opinion the kitchen area looks to be not quite in proportion to the home size. As it’s bunched you to allow a table in there too. This is just an observation... it might be that it works perfectly for you !...See MoreHelp planning open plan kitchen/living extension on 1930's house.
Comments (8)I’m glad you like the idea for the dining table! If I’m being completely honest I don’t really know whether the new layout ideas really give you any more useable space. Do you need a desk in the room? If so it might be worth having the bit of extra space but it could be worth making the garage storage space into a study space as well rather than having the desk intrude on your living space too much. What do you think? If you kept the bigger storage room then you could maybe do something like the picture attached so having a multi purpose room?...See MoreJessica
