24v underfloor heating-WarmFloor

Hi, we are currently having our kitchen knocked through into the dining room & adding a small extension to create an open plan space. Initially wanted a wet UFH system but the costs to dig up the current floor are out of our budget, so looks like it will be an electric system. I have seen a system by UKWarmFloor that uses low energy 24V electric UFH. Has anyone used this system? If so what are the running costs like? I haven’t been able to find any reviews on the system so I’m hoping you lovely Houzz peeps can help. Thanks.

Don’t do it I have fitted the system it does not work very well as output is only about 40/50w a m2 so rooms not warm enough. Also Matt is thin but wire going to it is thick. Connections to Matt are not good overheat and I don’t think will last. I have fitted many 240v systems and all worked well but these are between 150w/200w a m2 I would always go wet if you can. Andy, thank you for your opinion on this. We decided not to go with this system anymore as we couldn’t find any reviews on it.

It also depends on whether you have electric, or a "wet" system. Mine is "wet", meaning it runs warm water under the floors, just like a radiator. It is messier and more expensive to install, which is why I had it all done at once during essential building work (as the heating needed replacing anyway it worked out only a little dearer than replacing like for like), but it is much cheaper to run.

I wouldn't necessarily dismiss the idea of a wet room. I lived in a house with just a shower for over 10 years and had two babies while I was there - we worked it out. However I do appreciate it may make your house less desirable if you are planning on selling in the future. (although I will add when we sold ours 2 years ago the lack of a bath was not an issue). It sounds like you want to do some of the work yourself so perhaps get a plumber in and discuss what work you wish them to do and what you can tackle yourself. Same idea with the electrics. Agree with others to double check the dimensions of the bath you've found - most on-line retailers allow you to download the technical drawings of things like baths. Have you considered a sliding door? It may make the space more accessible. We've just put electric under floor heating in our wet room - with ours it's just designed to warm the floor to help dry it after use - rather than heat the room. We have a towel rail on the wall as well as the UFH.

As said ... it all depends on the heat loss of your building / room. A passive house (with near-zero heat loss / with actual gain) can be "heated by a candle", and it's actually a problem in such places getting the heat from, say, cooking "out" of it (don't get an Aga if you have a passive house !). On the other end, a drafty 1890's victorian terrace with an EPC E will leak heat so badly - floors, walls, roofs, windows - that no efficient heating system replacement will get it warm. That the old cable-based electric underfloor heating "cooks" your feet is true (my parents "upgraded" their 1980's electric UfH to radiators around 20 years ago ... because of that as well as the running cost). That carbon-film-based electric underfloor heating with its nice and even heat distribution is a much more comfortable "feeling" is also correct. But if your heat loss notably exceeds the ability of of your heating system to introduce heat ... it won't get warm. "Wattage" ... is just a measure of heat loss / gain, Energy-per-time. If you loose heat at a rate of 1kW then you need to introduce heat at that rate to keep the room temperature the same. My advice is: Get a heat loss calculation done first, before you embark on installation of underfloor heating. The manufacturers are usually rather willing to help with that, to make sure what gets installed is suitable for purpose.

I have exactly the same problem so I am interested to see what responses you get! We have been in the house for 3 months now with heating on fairly high and bathrooms particularly warm as they are linked to the central controls and have had no issues yet (we only have ceramic tile in bathrooms). I am considering regrouting but it is hard to be motivated when we have had no issues yet. I take some responsibility because I picked the grout but this was just for the colour, I expected that the building firm would keep us right with technical requirements so I can totally understand your frustration!

Hmmm, I'm still looking at it, but only as a secondary heat source... keep the feet warm, although what brand is undecided.

The previous owners put this in the bathrooms and neither worked and my sister had it in her kitchen and it didn’t last a year. That’s my only experience of electric under floor heating but maybe others on here have it and it works?

oh dear!... I know, put it in the walls, more square footage of it and hence more likely to make a dent in the heating requirement, no spending on heated mirrors, and easier/more likely to replace. I'm just being daft.
Maybe your sisters was made by the same people?
