Cooker Hood Size advice

Just brought a second hand beast of a cooker which is 100 cm wide. Rather than get a huge cooker good to match the same size would it look stupid if I got a 90 cm wide one??

I was thinking of a white one initially but maybe a stainless as it would break all the white up and I've finally gone for the white handIeless fronts. I will probably have a mirrored splash back (I have done this before and it worked well).

90cm would probably be fine: I’d suggest mocking up one with cardboard or similar (rather than drawing on the wall) just to see what you think. Look at different types of exteactor too - ones with glass canopies or ones without a ‘chimney’ etc. if you’d like it to be less imposing.

I too think it would look fine so long as the extractor is central to the cooker.

Stainless steel will blend in nicely with the splashback and cooker and is also Easy to clean.

I'm not sure on the extraction ratio but I couldn't live without a powerful, quiet range hood that vents outside. I think especially in a open plan kitchen, your going to want it as quiet as possible. My last one had the motor outside, mounted on the roof in the vent/chimney. It was so quiet and a pleasure to have on high if required. It was placed over neff induction hob.

Hi Huw, The minimum height requirement for a hood above a electric hob is 650mm and for Gas it is 750mm. Bear in mind that standard glass splash-backs are 750mm high so if you have it fitted higher there will be a gap. The chimney can be cut down to suit but if it is vented out of the wall you will need room for the extractor tube. Hope this helps. Phillip from Klass kitchens.

I'd like to add air extractors don't have a grease filter. It may increase smells (and everything that goes with stinky dirt) on the long run.. But most important: "An point to be checked is the required airflow for you extractor, normally this depends on the size of kitchen and also the type of cooking. The correct airflow for an extractor can be easily worked out, simply multiply the volume of the room by ten and you will obtain the ideal airflow for your kitchen. For example for a kitchen size of 4m x 4m with a height of 2.7m: (4 x 4 x 2.7) x 10 = 432. Therefore any product with the airflow of 432 m3/h will provide efficient ventilation."

I agree. When we moved in to our current house the previous owners had installed a narrower hood (I think perhaps 60cm) over a 90cm range. Aesthetically we hardly noticed, though we eventually changed it for other reasons. And with your suggestion the hood would be just 5cm shorter on each side. That sort of distance is not particularly noticeable to the eye, especially once you are just living in the space and no longer thinking about each and every decision.

Definitely a stainless steel hood.

You'll need to think about the width of your splash back. will you go 100cm to cover the range? Or 90cm following the lines of the hood? I don't think it matters too much. But my suggestion would be that if you go with a splash back that is 100cm (w), stop tiing short of the hood, so that the difference in width compared with the hood is less noticeable.
