Advice on curtains and furniture for reception

hi,

We recently repainted and refloored our front reception. I was hoping to get some advice on what curtains and sofas would go with the colour scheme we've gone with. pictures are attached. FYI the walls are creamish and the feature wall is a gunmetal grey. we have a dark wooden floor. The red curtains are old and need replacing and we need sofas for the room too.

any advice on type and colour of curtains and sofas would be appreciated. Thanks.

Love the dark grey and the floor. The windows need painting, get rid of the nets and tone those in using a very light grey ( couldn't get your pic light enough - but you get the idea ), and the a matching gunmetal grey for the curtains, to match your wall.

The fireplace is the big thing dating the room. So, i'd focus on amending or changing that too.

I like the grey you have chosen and it works well with lots of strong colours like reds & orange, or blues and I think my favourite at the moment greens. I would consider keeping the curtains neutral, then adding your colour on the sofa and a rug as well as artwork. Good luck with it.

Hi! It sounds like they're best left out. If you don't need functioning space then would just have a lounge with a couple of seating areas. The floor could look great,that will be a great find! How much light is there in the room? Neutral sounds great. You could also do the floor a mid oak to contrast with cool walls? I've done 2 plans. Pic 2 isn't great for tv viewing. Note the stools and coffee table shown would also be very small! It is also allowing for the lounge door being hung the other way. For pic 1 you could also fit another chaise still in front of the lounge window if wanted? Check out re tv's over fires if you plan on using the fire. I don't personally like them as focal points but it depends how you feel. Hope it gives some ideas anyway. I don't know if you're buying all new furniture but it would be good to draw exactly to scale to see what works. I would choose slim sofas in any case given the width of the room

No big TV! I know what my OH would say to that He couldn’t wait to get the big ass latest 4K tv. It would be a shame to lose the fireplace as it is a nice feature ( I’ve got nothing against traditional features) but if you have a nice one elsewhere in the house and this room is primarily for tv viewing then I’d be tempted to lose it. If you leave a small opening of the fire place you could do like Resh said and have a small gel burner, candles or some logs with fairy lights. Or maybe stash the AV equipment in there and cover with fire screen in front, back lit with orange Led lights so it kind of looks like a fire but isn’t. Dark colour walls sound fab, my only problem is I think the radiator will stick out like a sore thumb, so either paint it same colour as the walls, cover it, or maybe replace with one of them fancy Victorian style column radiators.

Bedroom curtains ican't be too plush in my opinion. I'd go for a good weight slub velvet and make sure you don't skimp on the type of heading. A lot of ready made curtains have 2" headings which can look cheap and nasty. Pinch pleats look great, but if funds are tighter, then go for a 3" Pencil Pleat. There are many sites that offer them made to measure for fairly reasonable prices. This one, Curtains2Go are good and it's easy to put in your measurements, and pick your heading type. I chose these cafe au lait velvet curtains with pinch pleats in a rough size for a bedroom window:-

Thanks Minnie, it looked like fabric that could be made into a curtain 😊. Sonia - it is quite dark but in a good way. I’d started out thinking Mizzle or Cromarty but then my husband (who is generally beyond silent in such matters) pointed out an oval room blue room and said he really liked it so here we are and we both love it.
