POLL: Is there a difference between modern and contemporary style?
Comments (19)Well I've learnt something new today - according to google, 'Modern' relates to a style from the mid-century, 1920 - 1950 and it never changes. 'Contemporary' is used to describe what is popular right now. I always thought they were the same as I took the word 'modern' on it's actual definition and not what's associated to it through interior design. 6 years agoI do agree with Opus Bathrooms. Traditional Kitchens really do look far more "homey" than most contemporary kitchens, especially ones with modern designs where everything is plain sheet aluminum. But then, we also have contemporary kitchens which look very much alive with character too! Take this one for example from BUILD:
It may not be as character heavy as a traddy kitchen like the one shown above in the poll, but it's definitely got enough character that it's not too overbearing.
Or even this from Sun West Custom:

6 years agoWith the greatest of respect they both look horrible and dated to me, and I'm not some young hipster type. I'm 50. The modern one looks dark and soulless, the traditional one is frou frou and American looking. Here's my inspiration kitchen, the chandelier I've just bought and the room I'm renovating/turning into a kitchen. My version will be more practical than the one that inspired me as it'll do duty as a dining room too, by having a kitchen table in the middle. I dont get the island thing at all.
