Lack of alcove depth

Hi, I'm considering alcove shelving/storage but the way our lounge/diner has been knocked through (by previous owner) leaves very little depth on one side - 14cm.

It's 32cm on the other side.

Does anyone have suggestions on how this might be resolved or worked around without looking odd?

I would have them as wide as you can on the left and then styled to curve to the right. Make it a feature perhaps.

With the caveat that I don't know what the rest of the room looks like, I would say that the simplest way to bring back symmetry would be to build out the pillar between the rooms to the same 32cm depth as the chimney breast, and then fit symmetrical storage that way. It should look as though it was meant to be like that.

Hello Shelly, I rather think the peaty, mushroom, blackish browns of the colour chart could look really nice.. Or deeper blacker blues.. With the alcove or chimney dilemma.. Contrary to what F&B have said.... I'd personally paint the chimney breast the darker colour.. It will not only highlight the fire and the mirror but draw the eye to it... The recesses then stay the lighter colour thus giving the room an idea of space. Eyes are drawn to darker bolder colours.. Darker recesses bring it all forward to the eye and then create the idea of less space if the majority is staying a lighter colour.. If you are working to a dark scheme then I would suggest all dark or the reverse of what I have said, so light chimney breast in a dark room.. It's to do with the majority ratio : ))

Agreed with Enova, a bespoke one door contemporary cabinet would look great and keep all of the wires and boxes hidden away and you can still have control with the sky box with sensors etc. If you have the door touch release (without handles and have a low sheen finish, it would almost blend in with the wall.

If the cabinetry needs to stay here I’d suggest .... Paint the white door charcoal, paint the folding door wall charcoal ( leave the door wood) - add wood back splash between wall cabinets and worktop. And paint the pillar wall charcoal too . Or - if there’s room and you don’t mind splitting things ... split the base cabinet into two - and the wall cabinets into two and place then either side of the pillar with the wall cabinets mounted on the worktop like a dresser instead - paint the pillar charcoal to the same height as the dresser - if you want to be a bit clever add a strip of gold to emulate the wood worktop on the pillar too . Then line up the table centrally with the pillar.... add a charcoal table cloth over the table with a wooden fruit bowl to tie up the colours .

I know they're super dear :( I don't know exactly where you are in Lancs but have you tried these guys, presumably close'ish although my geography isn't good?! http://www.marlinwindows.co.uk/installer-service.html have you literally been to/phoned all aluminium door suppliers locally? Just asking as, for example, I've just looked at one company (opposite end of country to you though) and although they don't advertise as selling crittall style doors, on one of their projects they suggested adding the transom bars to a client so it should be easily done?
