Hi thanks very much for the useful hints and tips, they've really helped! So far I've done a subtle re-jig of the decorative items on the shelves and thinned them out a bit to make it less busy (and more contemporary). I have added a cushion and throw plus a bit more useful storage baskets and so far I'm happier with it now. I also have to consider the overall flow of the room rather than 1 wall - for example when I walk into the room this wall is on the left and the sofa wall is on the right, and there was a risk that if I added shelves etc on this wall it would then unbalance the look of the room as the sofa walls are so far pretty plain. I'm getting a new sofa next month and when this arrives I'll be able to see the room in its finished form and can make any last minute adjustments!! I want to add some more shiny stuff and will get a nice chrome tray or centrepiece for my glass coffee table. Pffft, this house decor lark can take over your life sometimes :))

I LOVE the last light and I think something like that will be perfect over the dining table. I can't order from West Elm as your voltage is different from Europe's but I'll try to find something similar. Thank you so much! We had planned to put three different Tom Dixon beats above the dining table but it is all too much so we need to find somewhere else for them. I have tried the table with the orchid on the other side of the Horseshoe Chairs but that leaves a strange corner and somehow it didn't work. I don't think I want too much near the fireplace as it has a lot of stuff around it already. I'll take a photo and post it up here.

Hi Nicola, Well the extension will certainly give you much more room - it's going to be fabulous! I would not join the existing sitting room to the new space at the rear at all. If you are worried that it will be dark then do something with mirrors and lighting. It would be better to keep the sitting room separate as it is likely to be an 'evening' room and not necessarily needing to be connected to the busier 'daytime' parts of the house. When you connect all the rooms up, you can often end up ruining your furniture layout (which you eluded to) and all the rooms end up being walk throughs. However, I might be tempted to make the relationship between the 2 rear spaces better - kitchen and diningroom? Do they need to be separate at all? Could you do a lovely glass wall between them like this image? Just suggestions.......best of luck with your project. Nicky
