What colours to use with dark oak floors

I have recently moved into a 200 year old house with undulating dark oak floors. I intend to keep the floors exposed and want to keep the decoration pared down, particularly In the bedrooms, to enhance the floors rather than detract from them? I thought to have predominately pale colours with an injection of something bright? dark? contrasting? For cushions, curtains, bedheads etc. Any suggestions?

You're definitely going in the right direction I think, scandi/midcentury style would look great in your home, and the pared back palette will allow the floor to really stand out - see some pictures below for inspiration. Don't shy away from darker colours, but stick to the more muted/dusky tones rather than going too bright.

I think it depends on the undertone of the oak. Is it a warm dark oak or a cooler oak? Can you post a picture?

Hi there, It’s great to be able to work with a blank canvas and good fun too. I can see you love bold colours, but it can be hard to find the right balance sometimes. I would suggest a soft, calm colour on your walls which will enhance your furniture and create a real feature out of them. If you want to avoid cream, try a warm neutral tone such as Dulux Rich Praline 5. I think this is maple but still lookI think if you add more cabinets they will sit very well as long as the proportions match- You could also change all the handles so that they match. As far as a contrast colour you can choose ivory, brown, a brown grey, sage green and I think vibrant colours will also work like teal

Dark stain for original parquet oak floor

You are perfectly right all timbers receive the same stain differently. Rather than mixing the stains physically as liquids, have you tried applying layers of the two stains on a sample..ie this may have a differing effect. We often create a deeper / different finish / effect by layering a stain / stains. As for my engineered wood flooring recommendation against dark/ ebony I would go for a complete contrast for a contemporary look and use American White Ash see below: American White Ash - Saatchi engineered flooring above is a beautiful, durable contemporary floor. Thank you honey poppet. Those photos are excellent and are just what I had in mind.

To colourhappy: In answer to your question the floors in the bedrooms are very dark oak. They undulate quite a bit and have gaps and ridges. Hard to get a decent photo because the rooms are full of packing cases but I have attached some of the upper room and first floor hall.

If the walls are really pale it could look a bit too stark in terms of tonal contrast. You could introduce a warm stone colour as well as perhaps a pale neutral, this would really complement the purpley tinge of the floor (which is amazing).

Purply tinge. I hadn’t noticed that. They are lovely floors, the best feature in the house. Mind you I shall have problems making the furniture stand upright without wobbling! Your suggestion is good to have some warmth in the colours which goes along with honeypoppets suggestion.
