Add additional radiators to the central heating or electric ones

When we had our extension built our builder ignored the need to additional radiators and I was too inexperienced to question. We now have a fabulous extension, but it’s chilly in winter. Both radiators in the room are on the internal side, and we have a cupola and 4m bifolds. The chilliness is particularly noticeable under the cupola. My questions will a skilled plumber be able to fit piping for additional radiators or should we look for something electric. We have power in both the recesses behind the tv. Thoughts appreciated. The current radiators are position on the other side of the walls in the second photo.

Hi, what a lovely looking space.

A bit of a sticky one you're having here isn't it?

What you need to keep in mind is that if you add more central heating radiators, your boiler needs to be big enough and powerful enough to accommodate the extra rads.

This - alongside some minor building regulations - is the very reason why people often opt for electric heating in spaces such as this.

Check with a plumber about the size of your current boiler and whether they feel it will offer enough power to tack on a couple of additional radiators to the system.

If not, there are plenty of stylish electric designs out there that could help you to warm the room up and add even more style and value to an already stunning space.

Your extension looks very smart and contemporary so I would consider something like our Arrow, Dynamo and iRad electric radiators, which would fit the bill. They are also vertical which I think would fit well in space (there is not much choice when it comes to vertical electric radiators on the market but we have some great option that look great but also have a high heat output).

Thanks for everyone’s comments. It’s interesting to hear peoples thoughts about the air feeling dry. ASHP - this is an Air Source heat pump. Instead of burning fossil fuels to provide your heating and hot water it extracts heat from the air like a fridge working in reverse. The Government has incentives to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels- they pay incentives that vary from house to house but for a family house could well be £500 a year which soon offsets the additional cost of installation which is currently about £2000. This heating should also be cheaper to run than gas. However reading up more I now discover that the incentive is only paid to people with radiators which means I probably won’t look into hot air heating further as the house I hope to buy has radiators already. Hi Fifi, I haven't used UFH in a bedroom before, but I wouldn't be put off by the idea at all. I have USED electric UFH in a very large kitchen diner on a ground floor to replace all radiators. Although it's not something I would normally recommend (without a radiator in such a large space), there has been no issues with heating at all. I was very impressed. As you say, you can programme it to come on as and when you need. Also, is your bedroom on the first floor? If so you will naturally get some heat coming up from the ground floor. Hope that helps! dual fuel towel radiator and underfloor heating in bathroom?

Victoria, thank you. My husband is suggesting that we can achieve the same effect as the dual fuel in the summer by switching off all the thermostatic valves around the rest of the house and just keeping them on in the bathrooms, then keeping the central heating going for an hour or so each day over the summer. Do you do something similar or do you just not worry about damp towels in the summer? thank you

It seems to me that you can either have a conventional boiler that heats water and pumps it around radiators, or a warm air system or some sort of electrical heat source in every room. (Assuming an ASHP is not practical and installing a wet underfloor heating system is too disruptive and oil is undesirable). When I looked at this I concluded that if I were starting from scratch I would have chosen a warm air system which seems to be the heating of choice in colder countries like Canada and in Scandinavia. Warm air heating does seem to work faster than radiators and modern advances in filters mean it’s no longer associated with dust or allergens as it was in the 70s. You also free up wall space although the ducting will need consideration. Whether or not you decide on radiators or hot air the thing to consider next is the fuel source. It seems to me that with gas price rises the gap between gas and the more expensive electricity is narrowing. It does however seem that more powerful gas boilers are available than electric ones and the water flow rates are better so if you choose a combi then you can get a good flow rate for your morning shower. You might still conclude you prefer electric boilers (apparently they last longer and don’t need the regular servicing of a gas boiler). If you go the electric route then you might decide on more than one boiler, a tank of hot water rather than heating it on demand and thermostats in each room make it more efficient.
