Need suggestions how to give the front of our 1970's house a facelift!
Comments (10)You've done a lovely job on the back extension, which seems to be a totally different property from the front. The trick would be to alter the front, making it more modern and in keeping with your new extension. 1. Replace the windows with more modern ones like at the rear. You'll probably find that the small upstairs window is on a landing and there isn't room to make it bigger. If there is room to the left of the front door as you face the house from the street, consider making this a floor to ceiling glass window and glass door combination http://www.urbanfront.co.uk/images/doors/Image/clearglass_jpg.jpg . The upstairs window should be aligned to the glass window below it. Match the front door to the garage door. http://www.thegaragedoorcentre.co.uk/UserFiles/Image/Hormann%20Front%20entrance%20Doors/anthracite_300.jpg The entrance porch roof can be replaced and extended across the front, up to the left hand window, with glass and steel similar to the lantern on the back extension. Lastly, the front could be landscaped with a path from the driveway through a contemporary, low maintenance garden. Since you have several Mediterranean type plants, you might consider that kind of look. Include a specimen tree to the far left and lose the overgrown shrub near the driveway....See MoreThe front of our house
Comments (7)I do not think it is necessary to replace windows ect. The brick on your house is lovely and contrasts beautifully with the White windows. I love the width of your house, but I believe it is not apparent. The garden just needs brightening up and more light. I would remove porch and all plants. Start afresh by planting an all white sceme. Annabelle hydrangeas inside of your new wall, plant them to achieve a hedge 3-4 feet apart. Plant a row of low level peonies at the side of your path,or vanilla frieze hydrangeas. The path is your narrowest part of your house so low level are essential. Paint your shed to match the red brick of your house. Make some window boxes to go around your bay and paint to match. Use interior self supports painted with exterior white paint to support the window boxes. Plant window boxes with something trailing and bright. Black bamboo can be planted to hide shed if desired. Attach a wall hung canopy made of wood and paint it white. Add fake grass. Put some boxes in tall narrow plant pots either side of your door. Black bamboo would need a trench digging and a membrane adding to contain this, so if you consider this , ensure this is done before grass. Once the ground is level put garden membrane down with membrane pegs, the grass goes down on top of membrane and sand is brushed into the grass like a driveway. Anything you wish to do or not sure what my recommendations look like search in house, or ask the Internet how to do. I bet you are glad that your tree could not be cut down, and marvel at the trees beauty now that it has been pollarded. Update your photo, ideas may change with the different look of the tree....See MoreFront drive/parking advice
Comments (29)As someone else has already suggested, i'd opt for a nice gravel laid within a plastic honeycomb grid system to stablise it and keep it uniform. The whole construction should be subbase to avoid the need for planning permission and you can add a stone threshold detail across the width of the entrance from the road to provide an attractive approach and demark the driveway. I think your house is too rustic in appearance to suit tarmac and needs a softer more rural choice of materials to compliment the house, plus you have a large area so planting is crucial to maintain the balance between hard and soft landscaping....See MoreWhat should we do to update the front of our new home?
Comments (5)I agree - this house is true to its period. You could spend a fortune creating a different look but why? Take up a lot of that block paving and plant a garden. You’ll get a lot more pleasure from that than grey cladding or whatever. With the added bonus that when you look out through your large windows, you’ll actually see what you spent your money on....See MoreDanielle H
