Renovation- Master bedroom and bathroom, ideas please!
Hi all,
I'm renovating my master bedroom and bathroom and need some ideas! At the moment there are shelves opposite, and to either side of, the bed which are fairly useless. All the useful closet space is in the bathroom. See picture!
Ideally, I'd like a bathroom without closets, with a freestanding bath, shower and larger sink area and put some closet space back into the bedroom. A neighbours house has a walk through closet before the bathroom? I was also thinking of a dressing area behind the bed marked with a partition wall??
All ideas welcome!

Comments (14)What a pretty room! How ornate do you want to go? How about a dado rail and panelling (look up "faux wainscoting" for a budget friendly DIY solution) in the same colour as the door frames and skirting, to go really old school and elegant? That sort of look suits a statement armchair perched in a corner. As others have said, that floral wallpaper/fabric is great in a bedroom (I think). In an adult bedroom, I'd go a bit nuts with this stuff, frankly. Easy enough to change if you decide to tone it down a bit. If you do it above some classic panelling, it would ameliorate the look. Otherwise, perhaps cool rustic luxury. Matt black lamps, brass, white marble, a stripped brick internal wall (messy but cheap to do). By the way, I am exactly in the same boat as you. We are just finishing the renovation of a Victorian house, and our master suite is the bit that needs to be finished. If it helps, I am genuinely torn between the two looks below. My wife prefers option one - she is a US east coaster, used to funky lofts and DC/NY chic. I like option two - I'm British and grew up with friends whose parents had rambling period country houses full of clutter and slightly bonkers decor, with the odd Spaniel ambling around. Comments (13)If you intend staying here for a decade then you should make this house work for you and not the next people. I think that since you have already flagged extending in 10 years you should also future proof your plans now. If it were me I would have a bedroom where the current big bathroom is in order to give you the possibility of later extending over the ground floor extension. I would also want a super sized bathroom for my use - I have always believe the person paying the mortgage should have a better bathroom than people who visit three times a year. Comments (6)The ensuite will become an inner 'inner inner' room in Natalia's design. You should be fine if you have a smoke alarm in the dressing room linked to your mains with battery backup. Alternatively, you can lose the door to the dressing room. Natalia's option won't leave enough room for the seats to the window. By the time you've got your double bed in there, you'll probs have around 1m on either side of the bed to get in and out of it. Albeit, I still like that arrangement. Firstly to clear up the issues with the plan, the second space that is 8'5 x 6'5 is a landing (currently a study) in between the ground and first floors. So not actually on a level with the master bedroom and bathroom. There are 3 further good sized bedrooms and two bathrooms on the upper floors of the house.
The storage space on the left as you walk in to the room are only shelves which are about 35cm deep? Half as deep as the actual cupboards in the bathroom.
We currently have a shower in the bath but I would really like separate ones and add a touch of luxury to the bathroom, the bedroom itself feels quite big with large windows and high ceilings and would be even bigger without the shelving opposite the bed.. I have been thinking about something like this so we could keep a large luxurious bathroom.

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoI would say, it's do'able, but does it work? In my opinion no.
The width of the room is 3.5m. A kingsize bed is roughly 1.75m wide. That will leave you with 87cm walk space either side of the bed if you put up a false wall.
Not only does it conflict with the window position because you need the depth for the wardrobe plus around 1m crouch space at the rear of the wall, plus the depth of the wall, but it means that you can't have bedside tables either, because it's not wide enough.
If you wanted to add bedside tables........and my own personal view is that it looks funny without them..........then you need 1.75 for the bed, plus 1m ( for two cabinets ), that's 2.75m, that only leaves you with 37cm to walk either side of the wall to get to either the bathroom or the wardrobes.
The wall could only be the same width as the bed and I just think it looks weird.
If you look at the length of the room and how it will be reduced, I also think it affects that too much also. The wardrobes depth will be on average 60mc, plus 10cm for the wall and 1 metre of crouch space.........total 1.75 plus the length of the bed the other side of the wall, 200-220cm - Total could be 3.95m leaving 55-75cm at the foot of the bed to walk.
You could argue that the 75cm is plenty, that's true enough, but do you want to open the door and be met with the foor of the bed right in front of you?
I guessed the size of the bathroom for the interim until you measure. I'd go for something like Karen at OnePlan has suggested and don't change the bedroom, or if you want to have the shower and the bath, something like this:-
I put in a wall between the walk in shower and the vanity. Put in a double vanity with two sinks, a free standing bath and the toilet.
I think any more and you're trying to pack too much in and making things look crowded.

6 years agoI think you may be on to something there chloeloves................didn't move the door to the bedroom.........but. If you remove the shelving and put the bed on the left hand side I think you can probably improve the wardrobe area. I just have a problem making the bedroom look small and obscuring the lovely windows.
I am imagining at the wardrobe end............made to measure 'break front' wardrobes, they look like this............and because the middle comes out, it makes sense of the depth in front of the disused fireplace.
The wardrobe would go across the whole wall ( depending on how much room there is between the window and the wall on the right ). It's just not behind a wall.
I know that the wall sounds great, but in practice, I'm just not convinced. Not least of which, because where the wardrobes are also includes a large window and so everyone can see in. A dressing area to me is enclosed. So, I guess I couldn't really see the point of the wall, it just makes the room look smaller and you can't have the bedside tables etc.
I suppose it's all just down to personal preference in the end isn't it.
