Urgent colour advice: open plan living room-kitchen required, please!

Hi,

We had shortlisted colours for our open plan kitchen -living room and then came across wallpaper that we liked so now have to change the colour scheme and the decorators will be here in 4 days!! If I'm honest I can't detect the nuances in colours - grey tints in taupe or the brown hints in grey are lost on me but I know make a big difference so was hoping for professional advice!

Background:

We are doing an open plan living dining in neutral colours (dining table, bookcase, display cabinet etc all mahogany)...photos attached

-Floor throughout is beige marble effect tile

-Kitchen is U shaped with a breakfast bar - all in lamproom grey (windows on either side of the chimney breast)

-Feature wall is Harlequin Oralia graphite with an inset TV and inset Evonic 1030gf fireplace

- Back 'wall' is entirely glass i.e. 3 panels (6m) glass sliding doors with a garden view

- Question 1: What Dulux colour should the walls adjacent to the feature wall be?

- Question 2: What Dulux colour should the kitchen walls be?

- Question 3: What Dulux shade should the rest of the walls be?

- Question 4: Glass splashback or tile the chimney breast - if so, what shade?

(Dulux paint shade (our decorator wont work with F&B or Greene!)

I thought the 'Dusted Moss 2/3 or Gooseberry Fool 4/5 would work well but was hoping for some professional advice.

It's really hard to have an opinion on a screen............uinfortunately, colours just look different to people as the colours on their screens differ from one another.......does that make sense.

I can tell you however, having used Dusted Moss 2 & 3 on many occasions, that it is a lot more green than it looks on your chart above, which looks grey. It has grey tones, but as the name suggests it is a green.

Dulux is for sure, lovely paint,. The colour charts however, aren't so accurate and the paint mixing compared to the colour cards is also not that accurate.

I always suggest to people to go get colour cards and testers and paint at least an A4 piece of paper with 2 or 3 coats. Move the paper around as the paint changes with the light in differing positions.

Probably not what you want to hear, but you can't choose paint from a computer screen and hope for any accuracy at all.

I now prefer Valspar ( B&Q ), used to be Crown. The colour matching is phenomenal. The accuracy to the cards is spot on, and the paint is good. I used to be a Dulux everything fan................but since discovering Valspar I have been converted.

Thanks for the advice - youre right about the dulux shades being very different. I ordered paint chips and was surprised by the actual shades. I'm going to check out the valspar range - thanks for the tip!

You have a lovely home to work with. I would say don't underestimate mirrors for making a room look twice as big. Have you considered giant mirrors, or mirroring an entire wall? How about the curved wall? I would pay attention to lighting also, as great lighting can make your home look a million dollars and more spacious. I would make a focal point with television resting on a gorgeous storage cabinet, place wall picture frames on wall where tv is placed, this will draw attention to the art and cabinet rather than the tv itself. I would get highback armchairs and use them for both dining and lounge seating with a sofa. I like those Victorian card tables on wheels, that fold up, multipurpose. Only buy furniture you absolutely love, don't follow trends, follow your heart, after all you want to feel good at home. Don't be half-hearted follow your dreams, be confident. When you fully execute your interior passion you'll be happy and others who come to your home will sense you and credit your style as being authentic, true to you and they will love it as much as they love you.

I would raise the curtain poles up and make more of the windows. I would suggest a round dining table, extendable as mentioned. I think as it is a new build you probably need to keep to modern with an eclectic twist. Changing the flooring doesn't need to be over expensive but would make the room feel bigger and would give you more flexibility. I would use warm neutrals on the walls and use colour in your soft furnishings, rug and accessories. A few fab pieces of art with colour would look great. As mentioned above you could easily change the point for the TV. Use good quality wood floating shelves and you can have a space at the back pre-cut on order for the wires to go down and hide wiring and access by a cable tidy in a neautral colour for the walls. This will take away furniture on the floor taking up space for the TV and digital box, Xbox etc. Making the room feel bigger and this TV was on special bracket so you can bring the TV out and re-position or tilt up and down. Picture from past project including floating shelves and cable tidy. These shelves are in walnut with oak stripes on the front but there are many different woods you could choose from.

I'm doing all I can to stop it from crashing but no luck yet! I've lengthened the island from 3.2M to 3.6M to increase the storage for the kitchen but agree the island should be moved down slightly. I'd like a really large seating area but will have a play around to see how I can make this area work better as the settee is a little bit close to the island! I've always wanted a formal seating area and will have the space to do this but may be able to get away with 2 settees rather than the 3 I had my heart set on!! I'd put the TV on that wall so I could see it when I was in the kitchen cooking! But it would be better placed on the other wall for people sat at the Island to see. Your points are so helpful! This is the most productive day I've had in a while!! And I've just watched the George Clarke show 'Ugly House to Lovely House' to see the Crittall windows and I love them!

Hi Sophia, I think the floor is the most important thing as it won't be changed once it's down, paint it relatively cheap. The best advice I could give (based on my recent experience) is that if you put a cool grey floor in a room that's filled with sun it's fine. If you do the same in a North facing room it can feel gloomy and cold and then you have the option of taking well known advice for a North facing room which is 'opt for warm, creamier colours for the walls'. Well this doesn't work too well with grey floors, it can look sickly. Therefore, the floor is a consideration at this point. There is a gorgeous tile from Topps called 'Sculpt' in beige which is the very same colour as warm concrete and it has an amazing look to it. General advice is to avoid cold greys in North faicng rooms and opt for yellow based neutrals. I have used Skimming Stone in my kitchen (North facing) but it's got lots of natural wood. I like number 6 on the gooseberry fool! I really like that chill green colour for kitchens. I think it really brightens the kitchen up - like this kitchen example.

I love all the vibes in your style though - you've managed to make neutral colours exciting!!
