Hiding a TV (above a Fireplace or just mounted on a wall)

We would welcome your voting preference on the wide range of solutions currently available for hiding a TV.

Leave the TV as is and use a Screen Saver!

Many TV manufacturers are now offering a high resolution screen saver when the TV is in standby mode. Combine this with the typical thin frames of modern TVs and they are reasonably discrete, although you can't miss the black screen when the TV is turned off!

Frame the TV

Use a local framing company to put a custom frame around your TV. You can then combine this "picture frame look" with the connection of something like an AppleTV to display high resolution paintings or photos on the screen when you're not using it as a TV. There is even a new FrameTV from Samsung that is designed to look exactly ike a picture frame!

Mirror TV

These are either dedicated "MirrorTVs" which are quite expensive, or you can bond a special swiss manufactured glass onto the face of the TV, which behaves like a mirror when the TV is turned off. There are two main finishes (with a wide range of variations in between) - "antique mirror" which is quite dark when the TV is turned off, but offers an excellent low amount of reflectivity when the TV is turned on and a "modern mirror" glass, which is almost the same as a real mirror, but relatively reflective, so requires the lighting in the room to be dimmed when viewing the TV.

TV with moving canvas Artwork

This is a motorised canvas, which rolls up out of view, when the TV is turned on. These systems fit over any size of modern slim TV.

TV hidden by Moving Panel

This is a motorised panel with the TV inset behind. The moving panel can be a painting or canvas but needs to be reasonably lightweight. Their are models that either move the panel vertically or horizontally. There are some quite complex, James Bond-style enhancements on this, such as The Smart Wall - link attached in green: The Smart Wall

Have you considered "The Frame" from Samsung? They look fantastic and solve 3 out of your 5 options?

Sorry, only just saw you were an AV installer. The Frame is still something we installed for a client last year and they loved it. Videotree make a good mirror unit for one of their TVs.

Up vote the above answer, also you can mask the cable using white DIY selotape, or a clear one - gives even better effect.

The picture shown shows us a example of a badly installed TV where no thought has been put into the interior design of that element in the room. I can almost guarantee a Technology Advisor was not involved in the project as they would have found a better solution for the finish. Sometime the area above the fireplace is the only space in the room the TV can go, and when its property thought out it can work.

The unfortunate truth is the TV and fireplace are both competing for the same space and any solution is a compromise. Regardless of your desire for a fire it is bad anatomically to hang a TV too high. There is plenty of information online about the best viewing height and viewing distances for different sizes of TV. All this advice is ignored by many people - including professional interior designers. Looking at the design of fireplace you supplied perhaps you could bring a TV into the room and place it on the raised hearth when you want to watch it? My bet is that is the arrangement you would normally live with and then you would remove the TV from your room when you have guests? Or you could put a TV on a mobile stand that you can place in position when you want to watch it? You can get stands that would also take a SKY box or similar. The problem is trailing cables - and where the stand is positioned when not in front of the fire! You can even get devices that enable TVs to rise from the floor but they’re very expensive. Or you could project onto a screen that unfolds from the ceiling. Also very expensive. In my case, I opted to forgoe the fireplace, knowing the TV played a more important part in my everyday life. The room was then designed accordingly. Am I happy with the result? Yes and no but as I said at the beginning any solution - other than a separate TV room - is a matter of compromise.

If you have a beam which comes out a bit it will absorb some of the heat radiating upwards, I asked this question recently to an installer, he said there may be some degradation, its hard to predict but with a beam, and you can have wood or ceramic which absorbs more, then the damage is minimal. I know sometimes you just don't have the space to put it anywhere else!

Yes, “The Frame“ has only just been launched in the UK! I believe that TV cosmetics will improve over the next two years. With the thin frames and improved lightness of the latest TV‘s, there is greater ease of fitting custom frames around them. Many TV manufacturers are now also offering beautiful screensavers and if not, it‘s easy to add an AppleTV or another Streaming device to display images on the screen. The icing on the cake is a mirror TV and over the past three years we have perfected the process of bonding a special mirror glass directly onto the leading brands of TV‘s at about 60% of the cost of dedicated MirrorTVs. The advantage of this approach is that we can use the most current and advanced model of TV‘s, whilst the dedicated MirrorTV typically lags behind, using year old+ models.
