What to do with dark oak panelled walls?
We are renovating a house which has lovely dark oak panelling in the hallway and front room. We are wanting to modernise the whole house and are not sure what to do about the panels. Do we strip them out? paint them? or is there a way to make them look more modern?

Comments (17)Hi Robert - appreciate the comment. Floor Layout plan attached. The area of concern is the living area - the kitchen/dining are in the new extension and there will be a glass panel going across the extension ceiling in the kitchen area. Even with the glass in the ceiling and the bifold doors at the back, I still feel the light in the living area will be very limited. We spend a lot of time in the living area and our current living area we are living in is always flooded with sun which I am going to miss! I was thinking of putting a couple of LED white light panels on the utility wall to act as an artificial "glazed window" which can bring some artificial daylight. Comments (13)If you’re looking for dark blues, look at Craig and Rose’s Payne’s Grey. Despite the name it is actually the most beautiful shade of deep blue with a hint of grey. I spent months agonising over blues but then got fed up in lockdown and got the Payne’s Grey, despite worrying that it would be too grey for such a dark corner. it is the perfect colour, and I’m looking forward to using it on walls elsewhere. Comments (6)I think it would depend on the tone of the oak and the tone of the walnut. I don’t think yellow/orange oak would work with a reddish walnut, but an almost black walnut might work with a grey toned oak floor, especially if there’s darker tones in the oak. However, I would agree not to mix— you already have oak parquet and marble tiles. I think adding a third strong texture could be a step too far. If it was me, I’d either get an oak worktop, marble effect worktop, or a worktop that works with the tones within the marble. Speaking from experience btw—I once combined a harlequin floor, cherry effect worktops, travertine and accent patterned tiles. I hated it, it made me so uncomfortable that less than two years later I covered the splashback tiles with panelling painted to tone with creamy whites on doors and floor. Such a relief! And a much more flexible starting point for adding other colour/bursts of pattern....See More

As Dale said it would be a shame to strip out but I think I would be paint it. Carry out suitable cleaning and prep then primer and top coat, both of which may need a couple of coats. Colours would be grey, white or a blue. You have a big enough space to cope with darker shades of those colours and you are getting a lot of light from the landing.

I would just use more modern furniture, lighting... maybe a mid century ceiling light, a cream rug rather than red, an emerald velvet little armchair somewhere, a console table, quite sleek, maybe with brass legs... To me , these panelings really have an air of grandeur, elegance and charm.
