Hi we have recently decorated and all we have is a 220cm teal blue sofa (zinc French connection from dfs that we are waiting delivery of ) which will fit either on the wall right hand (wall to the right of the fireplace) or the wall to the left of the door, we also have the matching footstool. But I need to know how to have it not looking empty ...we will have a tv (on what I don’t know) that will be to the left of the fireplace. How can I inject interest and what furniture would you advise to try and make this large room not feel so empty and soulless please?

Hi. Is the bookcase staying in the room? I'm only asking if you need a tv unit etc to work with it! The room looks big enough for 2 sofas? Perhaps a smaller version opposite the fire and the other at a right angle to the fire. What are the room's dimensions? Is it a mid century modern look you're after? In terms of adding life, art, texture, pattern, plants, books etc will all work. If you give a bit more detail people can help with shopping suggestions. Also what size is the tv re looking for a media unit?

The tv is 42” and needs to be at an angle as the sofa is at the opposite end ...
the bookcase can stay or not ...it’s in there as nowhere else to put it at present.
The legs on the sofa are mid century style in dark wood, but I suppose I’m confused as to what style to go for!

We are thinking of getting either a cuddle chair which is about 136cm but we held off as I wasn’t sure it would comfortably fit, otherwise maybe the yellow ikea retro arm chair that is seen in a lot of pics!

Room is 5.5mx 3.5m

We did have two sofas previously but it left a gap in the corner as the two touched arms and it looked odd and over crowded.

The floor lamp we have is staying and the silver mirror is going above the fireplace.

I want it to feel cosy and homely as it never has since we moved in ...although since we changed the decor it feels better already.

I love the hemnes range too (I have some of the 'oak'), but the range contains a poor excuse for a dressing table :-( I know I'm going to have to compromise on something but I'm being stubborn until I've ruled out all my options :-)

You have very clean, sharp lines with your tiles and basin so we would recommend putting the soap dispenser and towel rail where it is, and then have the mirror centralised about the sink in line with the grout line - perfect!

Some great comments so thanks guys. I adore hanging plants so I'll make sure to put a few in the kitchen, especially around the door. I plan on having wall shelves with plants on, too. I think the outdoor mirror seems like a great idea, we can reflect the neighbours plants from their garden (well, hopefully, funny angled wall outside)! We've put a long table in the kitchen so far, with a bench on one side and four chairs on the other (against the wall). This allows the light from the doors to run down the table. Surprisingly the flat is very bright despite fewer windows and the lower floor being lower-ground almost basement. I think I'll keep the bedroom downstairs for now as it's not a room I spend a lot of time in. For me the bedroom is purely a sleeping zone.

It's a shame the door is where it is, it looks to be almost opposite the fireplace?

Hopefully the sofa can go opposite the fireplace, but I suspect maybe not.

You could perhaps consider a nice wooden t.v unit and possibly a matching chest on which to display stuff. Then you can have one on one side of the fireplace, and then one on the other side as a matching pair.

If you put the bookcase on the opposite wall to the wooden chest down on the left by the window, you could also have a little reading area, music area.

I do agree that you'll need an armchair or two.

I have made a quick sketch for you.

I agree that if you add plants it will feel already better. Also add big rug and a couple of oversized pictures on the walls. In my sketch there is one above the sofa - but not centred- and one behind the armchair.

Homepoise yes we did try the bookcase on its side but unfortunately as the tv needs to be at an angle it wasn’t wide enough for the stand and look awkward!

I like it all. I’m not sure on plants as I used to like them years ago but don’t really like indoor ones ! I was thinking about maybe some shelving either side of the fireplace. I can’t also make my mind up on the style /colour of the furniture, I am drawn to the painted grey units with oak tops but not sure if this will look right with the sofa style?

My idea was that whatever unit the telly is going to sit on, it would be at an angle and the telly would sit on it at same angle... Furniture pushed all against walls make room feel smaller. While some breathing space behind them help with feeling of space.

As for house plants: it's ok. Let's ditch the plants. Add a leather armchair -in place of the yellow one- and some brass elements maybe?

As for furniture colour. I would not dismiss wood as it will add warmth to and otherwise cool scheme. Adding brass elements would help bringing it all together.

If you're keeping the bookcase I'd go for the same layout as Valeria however with the bookcase and side tables as per 2nd pic so bring the sofa forward from the wall and I'd have the arc lamp behind the chair. I'd put the tv on the wall on a swing out bracket with the media cabinet beneath. I would probably go for greyish linen curtains and paint the radiator in the wall colour (1st pic!). I'd also add brass elements! Try and have more of one metal than the other. I like the mustard chair but wonder if this one also from Ikea would work? The art also comes as a canvas rather than a white mount but couldn't find an image! I'm not sure if you've ordered the plain or patterned footstool but this rug also picks up the carpet colour?

Hi Minnie, love your ideas, the plan was to paint the radiator in the same colour however we had a nightmare with b&q valspar paint as it took 5 coats to get near the colour promised and still then there’s a greenyness in it which wasn’t on the tester card..as a result we ran out of the (very expensive) paint and as b&q were extremely unhelpful I refuse to buy more paint from them (cutting my nose off maybe). The footstool is the same as the sofa.
Will def implement some brass and love the tables! Thank you.

Wow, 5 coats is an awful lot, how annoying!! Glad you liked the ideas, If you did have a particular tv cabinet in mind I don't mind shopping around for other ideas. It sounds as if the mustard chair could work with the unit but not the bookcase?

Hi all, progress so far and I’m in love with your ideas. Yet to find some brass accessories, but pulled the sofa away from the wall a good 80cm. Love the feeling now it’s starting to come together, yet to get tv stand or curtains and would like a larger rug, what do you think so far?

It looks lovely.

For future reference, we recommend car spray paint for painting radiators or Plasti-kote as its cheap and hard-wearing. Make sure whatever you choose is cellulose or acrylic based. I have sprayed some myself with great success. Good luck!
