Art Deco fireplace dilemma
Comments (37)The problem is the stark cold white walls against the soft warm browns of the fireplace. I don't recommend going all beige but try colours from the same warm spectrum as the fireplace and I think you'll find it looks more natural in the space. Also, the round candles don't work with the squares and oblongs of the fireplace; find other accessories that enhance rather than scream at the shapes and colours and that could make a huge difference. So could a mirror or picture above it - it would shift the focus so the fireplace doesn't dominate. Work with it, not against, then judge it. These fireplaces are handsome; trying to pretty them doesn't work....See MoreBedroom wall art ideas
Comments (7)I've generally found theres no truly successful no nail solutions to this problem. You almost always end up with some discolouration from whichever product is used be it tape, blu-tack or peel-off vinyl. My solution has always been to use small nails to hang things (obviously nothing too heavy). Then when I remove the nail at the end of the tenancy I fill the hole with a tiny bit of rolled up tissue. Just tear off a small corner of tissue and roll between your finger and thumb - creating a thinner 'point' to plug the hole. Cut off any excess sticking out. Finally use a white grouting pen to just dab over it. The end result is completely invisible - particularly because you're literally just looking for a pin-prick on a large white wall. Never had any landlords notice it so while it might sound a bit odd I promise it does work!...See MoreMore Space for Books and Artworks!

Comments (0)As an interior designer, I believe that almost without exception, successful interiors are enhanced by well-chosen art works, whether they be paintings, prints, decorative pieces, sculpture or photographs. I consider that carefully selected art can add both drama and focus as well as complementing the choice of furniture, materials, fabrics and lighting. Certain notable pieces even have enough authority to inspire and influence the whole design scheme including colour palette options. The choice of each art piece offers an effective way to demonstrate a client’s individuality as well as personalising the interior and adding a vital human touch to particularly minimal schemes. Framing is an art in itself and I am able to give my clients advice about framing specifications as well as how to display individual pieces to give the most striking effect – for instance, hanging them at eye level is essential and some pieces need space to make the right statement. If there are a number of photographs involved, I might suggest using the same frames and displaying them in a group that offers the most graphic and visual interest. Art is integral to interesting and engaging interiors and I like to help client’s display the pieces they already own; sometimes all that’s needed is a different frame or perhaps some fresh ideas. I enjoy introducing his clients to new art and creative concepts that I feels will appeal to them....See MoreJuliet Docherty
