What Kitchen Lighting Fixture to use?

So here's the thing. I have an obtuse L shaped kitchen. A 4 led spot at the cooker end which is also on the same switch as a weird single bulb fixture in the middle of the kitchen that's faulty and needs replacing - but I don't know with what.

Another strip might look weird, a 3 light round fixing wouldn't match. So I'm not sure what to do.

Ideally I want to just replace the dead light, but I'm happy to replace the dead one and the strip of spots together if it makes everything look better.

At the other end is a single light on another switch. I'm putting a breakfast bar in that end and intend to have a faux brick wall and, probably, 2 single bulb hanging spots in black (coffee bar style) - if that influences your advice in any way :)

Hi Ryan, Not terribly easy to understand the room from the partial panoramic - can you take a couple of normal views from different ends of the room?

I would certainly look to replace all the lighting, and try to tie it together with common "themes" of shape and/or colour/finish. The bar seems rather incongruous - if you wish directional, task lighting from that position, I'd probably look for a more shaped (disc-shaped?) fitting with 3 or 4 directional lights, then pick up styles/ shapes/colours that tie in. Have a good browse here on Houzz for some inspiration, or have a look at Wayfair who always have a wide selection of well-priced lighting options.

Thanks. Yeah it was like this when I moved it, the dead light is actually a rare tri-bayonet fit so I just want to replace it as it's always a dark spot in the room. It's all a mess at the moment :P The far left one for the breakfast bar will all change, but the middle and right/bar ones are on the same switch so I'd like to at least get them working and done.

I'll try and get a better photo.

My kitchen refit starts 3 weeks today but won't be finished until next year when I have decided on the splash backs. This has been a project 2 years in the making due to several builders agreeing to do the work only to never hear from them again & also some very poor service from kitchen shops. Finally I have a builder on board who will move a doorway to accommodate the new position for my fridge freezer and fit a Second Nature kitchen in elm that is to replace an old cream shaker one. Most of the appliances are staying as they are newish but for the first time I will have a dishwasher, a wall mounted oven so I can see what is cooking & a Franke under mounted corner sink which was a brand new ebay bargain. I am switching from gas to a white induction hob that will hopefully fit seamlessly into white quartz countertops. I am so excited, all this in a 2.6m x 2.8m kitchen. I have also asked the countertop peeps to smooth off an additional piece of quartz to fit the sink aperture so I can use that as additional work space. I am boring my boyfriend with endlessly searching for the best deals on things and trying my luck haggling which is not usually like me but lots of fun! Hi, What are your kitchen units like? Personally I think that the mix of the floor and those bevelled-type tiles would be a bit much for me, it might be better to go for ones that echo the same design as the floor but in a more subtle way. It might be a good idea to get some samples though of the ones you like and see if you can get a bit more of an idea of what it would look like in your space. These are some more toned down marble hexagon tiles. In this kitchen they used a similar shape tile on the backsplash but kept it plain. Or - you could copy the floor!

Hi Angel This a a common questions and it always comes down to what minor things you can sacrifice to get the best of all worlds. Do I have a pendant to create a dining zone? Do I try and retain the view outside? Do I make the space versatile for parties? In my opinion a light over the table looks great if you do not have one already over the kitchen island (if you have one). Keep the light above head level (of most of your usual guests) so that you can talk to each other . It may be worth cutting out cardboard and offering it above the table to see what works for you. The light doesnt have to be too imposing it could be something light the light below. or maybe something that is a feature but still see through like the below There are not many rise and fall lights out there that can really reduce that much to be out of the way on a standard height ceiling but if you have tall ceilings then it could work. You could try hammerite. It comes in spray and brush-on formulas and is designed for metal. It should also be fine over the top of small rusty bits.

Are there any thoughts you have on finish or style for the new fittings? A common theme would certainly bring the room together, however having functionality from each fitting would provide better coverage or maintain current requirements. For example the four spot bar; is that providing light to particular parts of the kitchen that needs to be kept?

I agree with the previous comments. I would replace all of the lightings/fittings with something that is going similar styles, as I can see they are very different and it doesn't suit very well altogether. You have said you're going to have a breakfast bar, I would suggest to have minimalist pendant lightings that hang above the bar. This would suit your kitchen very well. What styles do you particularly like? I would love to help you.
