Open plan living room layout...opinions please

Hi all,

We recently bought a new and much smaller dining table to fit nicely into our bay window.

This gave us some more room to play about with the layout of the room. I was wondering if anyone has any comments/ advice re the layout below? Previously we have had the sofa along the back wall and the chair at an angle on the left hand side (facing the back wall). This layout also worked well but with the smaller dining table we now have more space to utilise. Excuse my poorly bf lounging! Thank for any help :)

Hello. Can you add more photos so I can see the full layout of the room? I think it looks nice as is but if I could see the full layout, I would be able to give better advice. Especially if you're aiming to let more light into the room.

Hey! Thanks for your comment! Some more pictures here. I have also included an old picture of the layout we did have ( sofa along back wall). I just felt the old layout didn’t utilise the space enough but now thinking I’m separating the room up. Thanks for any advice!

I agree with many of the suggestions above, especially that there's too much furniture in the living room. You're going to hate me for saying this but I think there's too much clutter and busyness overall for such a small space. I'd radically reduce the number of pictures and knick-knacks in both rooms – especially the living room – and move the ones you keep to less prominent places. I'd also take the coat rack and cookery bookshelves out completely, and replace the busy parquet flooring with either not-busy plank laminate or a simple-patterned or solid rug. Finally, I like trees but that spidery palm tree is hideous IMO.

@minnie101 top left door will only be used occasionally. I have another sofa option, which is marginally smaller (more practical but less trendy) but has narrower chase which helps a bit with arrangement. I am attaching pictures with 1. Quartz layout 2. Another sofa option - Bari 3. Bari layout (thick masking tape) 4. Bari layout opposite longest wall. 5. Different view of the Bari layout opposite longest wall. Chase sofas are my preference, but i am open to other suggestions. Thank you very much, minnie101 :)

It's really hard to have an opinion on a screen............uinfortunately, colours just look different to people as the colours on their screens differ from one another.......does that make sense. I can tell you however, having used Dusted Moss 2 & 3 on many occasions, that it is a lot more green than it looks on your chart above, which looks grey. It has grey tones, but as the name suggests it is a green. Dulux is for sure, lovely paint,. The colour charts however, aren't so accurate and the paint mixing compared to the colour cards is also not that accurate. I always suggest to people to go get colour cards and testers and paint at least an A4 piece of paper with 2 or 3 coats. Move the paper around as the paint changes with the light in differing positions. Probably not what you want to hear, but you can't choose paint from a computer screen and hope for any accuracy at all. I now prefer Valspar ( B&Q ), used to be Crown. The colour matching is phenomenal. The accuracy to the cards is spot on, and the paint is good. I used to be a Dulux everything fan................but since discovering Valspar I have been converted.

I’m no good at drawing floorplans but womdered if this would work: - Keep the island but turn it 90 degrees to face the garden. You will probably need to drop to 2 bar stools - Shorten the kitchen run with the sink and hob on it. One of those may need to go on the island - Dining table goes in front of the doors to the garden, parallel to the island and to the doors - then in the space in between your island and your dining table, basically under the big steel, you put a small sofa on the kitchen side of the room and a tv on the opposite wall. Yes it’s a walk way but this is not your main tv watching area, it’s just for the kids while you prep lunch etc.

I think your layout is really good. How much space do you have between the back of sofa and the stools, assuming not a huge amount. I would actually push the L shape sofa nearer to the wall with the unit. You dont need space at that side to walk by so it can be pushed in more which would make space around your stools/kitchen end much better.

I think that the old layout is better for maximising space and really allowing room and light. Now that you have a smaller table so the space looks neater, you can reposition the big sofa along the wall (put the longer side to the wall by the table). I have attempted () to draw "before and after" layouts for you. Tell me what you think.
