Ideas for the front of the house

Can someone suggest any idea what can be done to the front of the house to make it more attractive? We are buying a house and love everything about it, the layout, the garden, but the front doesn’t appeal to me at all. I was thinking to plant a bush or a tree. The front windows are south facing, so it will be a lot of sun. We will be thinking to build an interesting porch, but I don’t like the next door one. Any idea of a porch or front garden for an Essex 1960s house? Thank you, I really appreciate your help.

Re planting a bush or tree - don't plant anything - even a climber - too close to the house. When we moved in to our current house the beautiful wisteria had broken the drains under the driveway and had caused/disguised a large crack in the render - cost us a fortune for the repairs. If your drains run under your driveway source a large planter that will take a tree. Personally I like lead or faux lead planters (grey) and you could paint your windows and door light grey or white and fit a porch to match. I don't like the colour of your neighbour's :)

A very large pot is a really good idea. Thank you, Pamela! I’d probably install kind of pergola porch with a big planter with a tree and climbers and paint all light grey-green. Thank you.x

I like your 70s house too from the photo, even your porch looks good, it suits the style of the house. Not sure that a country style or oak porch would suit, though they are beautiful in the right setting. You could search for images of 70s semis online for exterior ideas if your planning on doing a lot of work. A lick of paint and some potted plants should make it look much better though.

A box dormer with a pitched roof over the garage would give the house more presence. And I would rather see the windows with two vertical divisions rather than one uneven division. Personally I don’t mind the shutters and think their removal will likely show paint on the brickwork which is unsightly

My first thought was a canopy/porch but I see you have plans to do that in the future. A simple way to cheer up the frontage is a big flower pot either side with roses or evergreen shrubs like Viburnhun tinus or Cistus. There are many others of course. The pots need to be quite big, maybe half barrels filled with good quality compost. Keep them watered when dry and they will soon flourish. The pebbledash looks okay to me, but you could repaint with masonry if it needs it in the future.

Hi! It can be a little trickier to get a front extension than other types of extension. Is there any precedent for this in the street? It's not impossible to do, but it may need more of a robust argument and a higher standard of design to get planning permission to do it. For that you're best to work with a good architect who knows how to get planning permission. You have quite a nice buff multi brick, which could look nice with something like a zinc cladding adjacent to it if you want something contemporary looking that isn't render or timber cladding. All herbs do well in south facing conditions. a couple of rosemary bushes clipped into lollypop shape in pots would look great. also lavendar and baytrees
