Considering buy this forever home. Pleaseee Helppp?
Here is story.
I love Meditteranean style homes....Modern Meditteranean. We are considering buying a home that we can perhaps make some changes to as long as it has the foundation, sqft, price, etc.
One of the things I strongly dislike is the staircase (That leads to the bedrooms) right smack in the middle of the entryway. I don't want to see a staircase in the middle of the house as soon as I enter. Or at least the one that exists. I also don't like what the staircase leads to. The architecture of the top as you see in the pic (the dome shaped walls). Basically everything about it.
We would have some budget to do somewhat of an extreme makeover of this home.
What would you guys suggest can be done to improve the look of the foyer and the staircase? Would moving the staircase be an option too?

The staircase as you enter the house. Below it shows the opposite sides of room (Ceiling height - 9 Ft.). One is a formal dining room and the other is a formal living room. (I would also like to do something with the dome shaped walls on both sides.
***This is the living room (family room). As you can see there is a door on the opposite side of the staircase. This hides the stair case.
Looking to renovate to make it a bit more grand looking and much more updated.

Also attached are additional pics of the family room with that awful fireplace. I am thinking of removing carpet and adding hardwood floors. Also thinking about removing the entire dome like entry to the backyard by adding glass sliding door to the outside. The backyard/swimming pool that the family room would lead to is on the very bottom.

The lady who bought it came with a friend to do some measuring and in the course of the conversation the friend said 'oh I assumed you were an interior designer' when in fact I was a harassed working mother of two! Comments (32)Whilst I recognise there's a few tradespeople on here bemoaning fussy clients I have to say my biggest regrets when renovating my house was not being specific enough with trades! We had an electrician put in an extra light switch in the hall to control both the downstairs and upstairs lighting. He put it in a good 10-15cm lower than the other switch further along the same wall which looked completely ridiculous. Made him move it in line with the other one much to his annoyance. Another similar incident was with a vertical column rad for the kitchen - whilst I was specific enough this time to ask it be centered to the wall it was on, he installed it much higher than needed with about 30cm of pipe sticking out the bottom! It would have looked much better in line with the doorframe adjacent. Had to learn to live with that one. We had engineered wood floors put in upstairs - the fitter used the shortest wall in the smallest room to take a plumbline from. When it came into the hall it was obviously on a complete wonk. By this point I'd gotten a bit better at speaking up and ensuring we actually got what was needed (and paid for!). He had to take it up and re-lay using the hall as the plumbline. Looked so much better but he was extremely annoyed! After all this I learned to use masking tape to direct exactly where pipes/light switches/trim should be fitted so there was no room for 'interpretation'. I also forced myself to speak up more and advocate for what I really wanted. That said I'm a designer by trade so I generally know what I want and how to make it look good but was definitely a bit too shy to contradict trades in the beginning!...See MoreWhich Range Cooker?
Comments (8)Hello Charlie, Well.... If we're talking range then Wolf is my favourite. I also like a white Aga... Failing that Smeg are good. I have had one for 11 years.. Not the same one I moved.. but I do think they are excellent.. What I would look at first is how and what you like to cook as this will help you decide what size to go for... If you have the room go for a 6 burner see image.. These styles are dual fuel which I prefer, and think the Smeg oven is very reliable.. Have a look at a few models to see what you think, but I find them quite easy to clean and they fit the "chrome" look. So you might want to consider a double oven which is pretty useful when cooking a main dish and then say a pudding or canapes in the smaller of the two.... Price? That looks like a great idea, actually if we kept bathroom the same (it's already been newly done) and left the external wall into the cupboardy bit the same/no need for re-enforced beams and have washer/dryer stacked in the cupboard space, all we would need is the support between kitchen and living room which would work out much cheaper than I think my initial model would be (and possibly a little more practical too, and possibly more value) Here is a bit of a prototype of the size of the space we'd have to play with, I think it would be big enough for our needs (not massive amount of worktop space which is something we'd hoped for, but really I think it's enough) and also some space to fit a small table and 4 chairs in front of french doors and means not having to rip out whole of bathroom downstairs. I think I may take some advice from temple274 too, and instead of building whole bathroom upstairs and trying to readjust windows, I'll just make a small ensuite in top right corner of bedroom 2. I've seen little porthole windows you can get, but equally like temple274 says all I'd really need is adequate ventilation. 6 years agoIf you love Mediterranean style homes, then the arches are part of the Mediterranean Style.
I wouldn't move the staircase - too much work/too high of a cost/too much trouble to mess with the part of the house that is foundational. Unless, your reno budget is limitless. But in that case I would then keep on searching the market for that perfect "forever home". There's plenty out there to suit your style. IF NOT, then modernize this home to your liking.
To modernize the staircase my recommendations would be:
1) get rid of the carpet - do not cover the stairs with carpet at all
2) replace traditional looking spindles with modern, metal ones
3) stain the wood darker
The entire foyer in tile would look way better if it were dark wood - either hardwood or engineered, but the wood-floor look. Or dark slate stone tiles would look good too.

6 years agoIf you have the budget and are willing to reconfigure the living room or dining room entrance and arched walls and do new flooring, I don't think it would be a huge deal to demo the stairway and move it to one side and redo all the railing. Its not like the current arrangement is holding up the second floor. Looks like a very nice property and of course there will be many tempting ways to spend your money here.

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoI'm in the camp that thinks the staircase is part of the grandeur of the entrance, and it just needs to be touched up to be more dramatic and less structural looking -- stain and a dramatic runner might do the job, and/or some reshaping of the railings.
