Small privacy fence/trellis

Hello Antonia,

We are a small residents group with a small community fund and we are trying to source a simple fence/ trellis to provide one of the residents in our communal garden with some privacy. We would need someone to build or put it up for us. Do you take on very small jobs yourself or would you know someone to recommend? I chose you as on some pictures the fencing on top of brick walls is similar to what we have in mind. We are situated in Soho.

Hi Veronique - I can tell you that the fence trellis panels came from Jacksons fencing - however this type of product would be readily available from many different sources -I imagine there are some good deals going on the internet for this product. Regarding someone to install it - my studio is purely involved in the design aspect of garden projects and any building works are carried out separately - however anyone handy with a drill and set of screws could quite easily put these panels up. Good luck with your project, I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Style and colour looks nice and you can find many shades in the greens, blues, greys that will look good. It depends on your garden theme overall. This one was possibly made to measure so cost is a consideration. There are other options such as tall palisade gates, and louvre and slatted panels or combinations of louvre and slatted with solid panels, plus many trellis styles to top panels that are off the shelf (Jacksons, Grange, etc). I think you will find ideas here. Just consider that if people can see in (top section trellis or other) this helps the look overall and importantly aids your security. If others can see in, then they can see if anyone is in your garden who shouldn't be! As its adjacent a road, I suggest you also check your local planning regs for fence heights adjacent to a highway.

You need to know the orientation of your garden before you plant anything. Where do you get morning sun, where do you get evening sun? If you want to use the trellis you will have to put some tension wires along the wall to help your climber reach it, unless you grow something like ivy which will cling without support, but in the long term will undermine your wall. There are quick growing climbers and often younger plants take root quicker than larger ones, because the larger ones can resent being moved. Try not to be in too much of a hurry. Half the fun is in the doing and watching things grow.

Hang on, not so quick! :) I've painted our trellis and it looks - or should that be looked - rather classy. It was a lot of work, it's more intricate and therefor more time consuming than an actual fence, I think. I was dead proud of it, but yes to keep it looking good is tricky. Ours really needs another paint job and I'm not looking forward to it. I might just resort to doing the posts and its caps only. Hmmm, maybe your wife is going to win this argument... :-)

Garden rescue is my favourite program at the moment and the Rich brothers just used three staghorn sumacs in a garden and they looked fab. I thought they would manage well in the raised beds with their shallow roots. I know they do sucker but I’ve had them in many gardens and never had an issue. Peachypear many of them only get to three metres high and my philosophy regarding trees is loppers and pruning saw are my best friends.
