Grey windows on 70's Brick house (without render)?

We are currently gathering quotes to update the outside of our 70's built home.

The original thought was to go the whole nine yards with white render over all brick work and cedar cladding where the current mismatch of tiles, white upvc and faux stone cladding is and replacing the windows and doors in anthracite grey.

Having had a render quote of £7k thats no longer on the cards....so now I am really struggling to picture grey windows without the render.

So now I have a couple of questions:

- Has anyone found any programmes online which allow daily easy mock ups?

- Will grey windows look okay if we were just to replace the cladding without render?

- What are people's opinions on cedar vs upvc cladding?

- Has anyone rendered only the front and back of their house....

I would go for it. We have a 60's house and have replaced all our windows with grey. We were having a modern extension at the back and wanted those windows in anthracite. We have now rendered the bottom half an off white and are about to replace the tiles with larch but think you'll agree from the pics just after they were installed it still looks better with the grey windows. If money is tight, paint the tiles the same shade and clad under the bay with a dark grey wood whilst you save up for the render.

I have replace my windows with warm pale gray/green and part rendered. It looks fine to render only he front and/or back. Brick with white windows is a question of personal preference, some think it's classic, I prefer the softer grey as it looks less harsh.

Thank you for your suggestions. I'm not sure why but I feel put off having any type of cladding at all! When we bought the house I never really considered the cladding but now we are in and have installed vertical blinds at the windows it all just feels so stripey. A house on the culdesac has sort of covered where the cladding was with stones which looks a bit dated. But others seem to have just rendered the sections below the windows. I didn't know whether this was somthing we could do if there wasn't any brick below. I'm not sure exactly what is behind the cladding or how neatly the edges of where the window once was meets the rest of the wall. It feels sort of hollow when you tap below it but I'm assuming there must be somthing under the cladding before the plasterboard. Although maybe not?

I saw these pics and thought of this post. They do show that getting the right palate can completely change the feel. I also liked that both of these has added some covered outside space. Don’t forget that any external remodelling will require planning permission. There are also architects who specialise in exterior remodelling

Theres a huge number of little things you could do which wouldn't cost much to retrofit. For example changing the windows would help as they are the eyes of the property, but I'd recommend a muted oak colour not white with maybe the large window above the garage being a nice bow window coming out. You could maybe add a little detail to the end gables in the barge boarding or some natural timber cladding as well as large natural timber posts in the front porch to update it. Its got a good base structure and just needs a little vision and TLC. Good morning Laura,

Cedar vs uPVC

The main benefits of using uPVC cladding is that it requires minimal maintenance and its very durable, as well as being a low cost alternative to timber cladding.

Timber cladding however is aesthetically enhanced and provides a textured and organic look.

It may be worth having a look at imitation timber cladding, as they are often hard to tell apart from natural timber cladding - this way you can combine the classical features of timber cladding and the functional and practical purposes of uPVC.

Render

If you are seeking to change the appearance of your house with render and new cladding, you may need to seek planning permission from your councils planning department.

For continuity purposes, we would suggest rendering all elevations of the house, depending on any design constraints.

In many European countries the facade is the only fancy part of the building, with brick used around the rest of the building and stucco or render out front.

I would render first then replace the windows, as that would make the biggest change and the windows and door are fine looking as is.

A cheaper option is to have the upvc windows painted to the colour of your choice. Professional companies can come and spray them and the finish is no different to replacing the windows.

Hi everyone,

We have decided to go for the grey windows and it’s looking
Iike cedar cladding may even be on the cards.

Now the dilemma is which colour front door.

We are having an Edinburgh Solidor

But I can’t decide whether to contrast with French grey or stick to anthracite? Any thoughts?

Anyone have any suggestions for a programme that would let me mock it all up?

Hi, I would keep the front door the same colour as the windows. I did a mock up for you with Photoshop. Made the window frames the same colour anthracite as the Solidor door. You probably have different window frames, but I still hope it helps you to visualise.

We've gone for black aluminium and the door will be full orange (glass is temporary) then we will white k render the front. We love it! Wanted to take it back to its mid century roots in a contemporary way

mines a little bit older but give you a real life example, has blue glass as well, I think I might render the bottom half in either white or Weber stone grey.

I would leave the brick and clad (larch with cedar stain) the other bits. Paint the windows, sifts, fascias and door black. Just done it to back of mine (pic below)

We went for it - the photo is a little further up the feed before we had the drive done and painted the hanging tiles to match. We get lots of comments from passers by that they love it but i'd still love to get it rendered so they really pop rather that it be so dark.
