Help to change the front of my ugly 80's (infill) house?
Comments (31)Hi Malley. Thank you for asking my advice! For what it's worth here goes; I agree with you that no extension of the front window is needed, the oak framed porch with A frame exposed, extending further out as per celery girls input with wisteria and box plants looks great. Regarding colour, I'm afraid I disagree about the brown windows, to me they scream 80's developer taste and are very dating and clash with the red. If you are going to go to the expense of replacing the windows to enlarge the apertures I would consider grey or grey/green grey/blue, these will all tone nicely with the red brick, white would be too harsh. Love the idea of the juliette window BTW. Do a search in Houzz for red bricks and grey windows, you will get a lot of images to think about. I'm not sure I agree that adding solar panels to the roof will be an improvement, yes they will break up those tiles, but they are not a thing of beauty are they, could they be on the rear instead? If budget did allow, after you have done your extension, windows etc I would look into the cost of replacing those roof tiles with slate as again I think they are dating, but agree with Daisy that it would probably be expensive and would not increase value on the house. Best of luck!...See More60’s facelift ideas needed!
Comments (11)I love contemporary but I can’t help feeling that the large plot and surrounding trees suggests a country setting and perhaps a traditional makeover would sit better with your neighbours. There are lots of ways this can be done with prettier windows and cladding or render. Don’t rule out replacing the roof tiles- this may not be as expensive as you imagine. Of course you could save money by only altering the front and moving onto the back later. Personally I think the biggest upgrades to this house could be to put a pitched roof on the garage and replacing the garage door with something that looks more expensive, to landscape and put a wide sweeping path to the front door and to make the entrance more imposing. I think you should consider your budget and then approach a designer who specialises in external upgrades and can help you visualise what is possible. Don’t forget that when you have a plan you will need planning permission for a lot of the changes you could be considering....See More1950/60s Council House front garden and porch needs some work
Comments (4)Changing out the door to one with horizontal glazing would make a modern change. I would think twice about pink as a color unless you really are a bright and out there color person. Some bright pots with some bright spring color might give you a taste of color into your front area. If you are needing the lower area for parking, just plain concrete would do the job, but it would be more interesting to break it up with grass.. for example. It would also help with allowing water to drain through the soil rather than creating another area of water run off...See MoreHelp with our 60's house exterior please! X
