Silestone versus other brands

I would be really grateful for some impartial advice on the quality of different brands of quartz. We have decided to go with quartz for our worktops but are getting differing advice on the quality of different brands. We have been shopping around but do not want to compromise on the durability and stain resistance of the surface. Is Silestone worth the extra cost or would we be simply paying for the brand name.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

We have been using all products from Cosentino group. We find Silestone to be of superb quality and have very few issues - usually its educating the homeowner to the do's and don'ts... it is a brand new surface for the homeowner and old habits may need to be changed. It is easy to look after and maintain, the back up service from our suppliers is superb - if required (only twice in 10 years). I have visited the factory twice...so have seen first hand the quality control that is in place. So to end, I wont gamble on unbranded or own brands. Take your time, gather your feedback and make a informed choice. Good Luck.

If you do a websearch for “quartz worktop comparison” there is more info available than could be condensed into an answer here. The upshot of my research a couple of years back was that most of the main brands (not just the top 2 or 3) have 93% quartz content and that it what gives it the durability. I think that Silestone has an antibac property, if that is important to you. Ultimately, some of the choice will come down to who has what colour/finish. We went with Arenastone because it had the particular warm grey I was looking for with no sparkle. I would say that perhaps more important than brand / price / colour is the templating and fitting. Make sure whoever you choose is very knowledgeable. There have been a few examples on here of some shocking installations, which of course ruins the whole kitchen.

I completely agree with Alan, very well said! My husband often buys originals, I'm actually not so keen. Firstly, because whilst I appreciate the innovative process, crafting techniques and often mastery involved in creating a new product, I often find the price to be unjustifiably high. For example, how can some of the Kartell products (which are not high-end, but not exactly cheap either) justify their price? It's just moulded plastic (and some a bit tacky too, in my opinion http://www.ariashop.co.uk/bourgie-table-lamp-multi-pink.html) Secondly, for a very personal reason. I'm often absent-minded and a bit clumsy (a lot, says hubby); having a £5000 vase that I can knock down with my elbow would just be an added stress for me and I don't need it. I live in a home, not a museum, I don't want to hear "but that bowl you just chipped is a unique Daum crystal" (true story!) And lastly - someone designed something 70 years ago, s/he died and now his family or whoever owns the pattern doesn't allow any kinds of replicas or even products with a slight resemblance to the original - and threatens whoever does it with law suits and high penalties. Well, excuse me, but I wasn't alive 70 years ago, maybe I would've designed that first. I find it idiotic that someone who had no direct contribution in creating something will still milk that product/ concept decades later just because their mother/father had a great idea one day and they inherited the design rights (I really don't like you, the Calder Foundation people!)

Problem with silestone worktop

We are about to get a cosentina silestone worktop and large island fitted. It is costing a lot of money. We previously had a granite worktop which was very durable but i just didnt like the aesthetics of granite. We are also getting an integrated sink. What sort of bevelled edge do i ask for at the sink? I'm confused by the measurements? Is it better to go for 3mm bevelled edge? We were offered another quartz from the company which they buy in bulk and so was cheaper but i was thinking the cosentina silestone was a better option given they were a well known brand! Have other quartz counters just the same issues??

any quartz worktop is usually not considered as a more expensive than granite. If you want cheaper option and don't mind to stick with quartz, go for a different manufacturer. There is Unistone, Cimstone, Technistone, Ceaserstone... Calacatta design become very popular nowadays so a lot of mentioned above might have such an option.

Quartz is great material and extremely durable, but if stain resistance is important - known fact is that glass beats any other material on this parameter. We've supplied some glass worktops to chemical lab in the past for particular this reason - after they tested all samples, they came to conclusion it's best resistant to reagents and easiest to clean every day after their lab works.
