Should we put a dark blue kitchen unit in a low ceiling room?

Our ceiling is only 2.2metres and the room is 30 sq meters we have three large windows in the room and are planing to put in a navy kitchen in a u shape . No wall units only floor units . Work tops are going to be white corian and the floor is light grey

Are you going for standard height worktops? If so, I think it will be fine as the units will be just over a 1/3 of the wall height (things on walls seem to work better when in 1/3s or 2/3rds rather than splitting a wall in half). I would either paint the walls and ceilings the same colour or just go a shade or 2 lighter on the ceiling than the walls so you're not creating contrast. I've found this kitchen which I'm guessing is a similar height

I think it will look very spacious. 30m sq is a good size. It would be nice to see a pic of the room and layout. All the colours you intend to use are cold colours, so make sure you get a bit of cosiness back with a contrast in there. If you're putting a table and chairs in there for instance, orange will work great with navy, white and grey.

Obviously I have no idea of the actual dimensions / spacings of anything in your kitchen, so this is just an artist's impression.

First of all removing all the stuff that doesn't belong in a living room will help. The living room feels like a closed off space because it looks so different compared to the dining room and kitchen. Everything is white and has a nice tiled floor. I would suggest continuing with this in the living room or you could put the wallpaper from the dining room in the living room as well. Having a floorplan would help when designing the space, but I'll try my best without a floorplan. Where the fireplace goes I would suggest letting someone make a custom cupboard. You can hang the tv on the space above that cupboard and make that the tv station. I would remove the sofa from the wall and move it closer to the "fireplace". Add a nice carpet and a coffeetable. Add a floor lamp and pick a different light fixture. If you want you can also create a seperate reading nook. I hope this helped.

I think it depends on the aspect and lighting levels of the room. If it's really light you can have anything, if it's North facing I would introduce warmth (wood or similar colour). It's personal taste but I'm not keen on timber effect tiles, maybe it's the gaps between them. There are so many amazing large format tiles now, look at Mandarin Stone.

Hello! It’s arrived but is being fitted Monday :0) The colour wasn’t quite what I wanted as although it’s not supposed to have any blue in it, if can look blue in some lights. I don’t mind it looking deep navy but sometimes it looks lighter. Will see when it’s all up though as with the worktop on the island and overhang, it will probably just look more black! Bear in mind the company didn’t use actually F&B paints as they mix their own. Definately advises paying for a test door first as they got the colour totally wrong at first (was bright blue!) and it was hard work getting the manufacturers to check it and do it again. They almost didn’t.

I guess this will come down to how much you want to spend, if you are prepared to do an extension out the back then assume you are comfortable with some structural work. Also if you are happy to lose the garage or some of it you actually have a much larger space to work with. If it were my house and I had the budget to do a complete ‘rejig’, i would do the following: 1. Push the bathroom, utility area and storage areas into the garage but still leaving a garage door with a much smaller ‘garage’ space for stuff we just dump in the garage. Add a door if possible to the garage much closer to the front door to access the storage area. Access the bathoorm and utility via the currently under stairs door. 2. Now move the kitchen to the right into the space currently occupied by the bathroom and study, creating space for a nice size island, room fo an American fridge freezer and tall cupboards etc. 3. Move the study to the left hand side, which would run from the garden wall where the first bifolds end down to the existing vertical beam column, effecitvely making use of this as part of that study and therefore it isnt just a column in the middle of the room. 4. You will be left with a large L shaped kitchen lounge diner, where you can either choose to have a play area in front of the kitchen or tv snug and dining area to the left of it or vice versa. Whatever suits! Obviously this is without seeing the actual spaces and room dimensions to see how much open space you would get but looks like could work from your floor plan. Maybe too much work though :)

@MATH - assuming you have gone for a square room around 5.5m length - do you think that is width for base unit, gap to island, the island, gap to table then table and chairs? Just wondering as thats the width we are working with and I am wondering if it could be tight? Thanks

Good morning Andy,

It would be great to see a layout of the ground floor plan (an estate agents plan would do fine) so that Houzz users can look at the entirety of the house and how it all works together.

I do think there's enough room yes - I've adjusted this render to 5.5 each way.

As you see the units and worktop on the right are 600mm. Then there's a space of 900mm to the island. The island I made breakfast bar width at 900, but if you want more space you can drop down to 600mm. You then have a space to the left of the Island measuring 3500mm. Plenty I think for a table and chairs. Obviously if you wanted more space and you used the 600mm wide island, then you have an area 3800 wide. Ample.
