did you use white grout/mortar?

I just had a new fireplace done using white stone and he used a gray mortar instead of white ! What can I do to make it white?

Hi Patty.

Generally yes, you want to use white mortar with white stone. Without seeing it I could only guess at what could be done. Hopefully it is just a matter of the grey mortar showing in between the the white stones. In that case scraping out the grey mortar as necessary and perhaps shoving some white grout in between to cover the grey would help. However if the issue is that the white stones are somewhat opaque and the grey mortar is visible through the tile than the options are limited to starting over.

Time could help as well. Letting an installation sit to dry for several weeks could remedy surface discolorations. Good luck

Hello allyallyally3, I think it depends how much contrast you want to show.. I don't think it will make anything look closer but the darker the more pronounced the aesthetic.. I quite like the dark and I think it looks really stylish.. (don't take notice that they are kitchen image- just to show the grout and how light or dark can look quite different.. Either way I think it's really nice! : ))

You might be pleasantly surprised how different it will look when you change the wall colour. Perhaps if you didn't that first, you'd not need to change the grout. I'd agree; if the tiles aren't symmetrical then a darker grout line would highlight this. I'd also agree that dark grey would look great - you have this in your floor mats and it looks nice against your gorgeous floor tiles. We went grey in our ensuite. Hubby was concerned it would be dark, but we love it. Worst case - if you change your mind, paint is an easy swap. Good luck ;)

Hi, I would suggest a pale grey grout as it is subtle and much more forgiving than white. I have attached a couple of examples where I have used a mix of dark and light tiles with a light grey grout. Hope this helps, David.

Our advice in a small space/ bathroom would be to go with white as it creates an homogenous surface. Use anti mould grouts to assist the cleaning and maintenance. A light grey grout if grey at all, will make a white tiles wall seem very busy and smaller Black grout is very stark and unforgiving so I would not suggest one ventures into the darker range of greys, even in larger spaces.
