How do you keep the wood siding looking new?

We love this house, and showed the exterior to our architect as the kind of thing we are wanting for our new build. I just had a look at it on google street view, but it was a shame to see how time has left it looking very sad, with the dull, grey siding. How can you keep the wood siding looking new? Are there any good alternatives?

Hello, lovely to hear you like our project! Unfortunately we weren't involved on the build so can't say what treatment was given to the cladding but a good quality wood stain would prevent any aging of the timber (though some people like the aged look). The reason timber cladding goes grey is due to UV rays, so by using a wood stain/treatment with a bit of colour you block the UV reaching the timber. Re-treatment will be required but frequency depends on different brands and exposure. Your architect should be able to provide some advice on different types of timber, including heat treated timbers, and alternatives like composite and fiber cement cladding from companies such as James Hardie (we've used this on several projects - Bracton Cottage on our website for example). I start taking my decorations down in the days after 2nd Jan but usually leave a few bits up until 5th of January, the evening of which, I (and the Church of England) consider to be Twelfth night. It seems logical to me that Christmas Day is the first Day of Christmas, and twelfth night is the last evening before Epiphany. When you’ve spent a long time deciding which is the perfect wooden floor for you, you’ll want to keep it looking good for as long as possible. Unfortunately, opportunities to get scratches in your floor are plentiful, but can seriously detract from the overall effect. A beautiful wooden floor with an ugly scratch mark isn’t always easily fixed either – with a solid wood floor you can always sand down the top layer of the wood and refinish it (although this is a big undertaking and not a quick fix), but for laminate flooring this isn’t even an option – you’ll have to live with it or replace it. In this case, prevention definitely is better than cure, so here are a few easy ways to keep your wooden floor protected from scratches. Footwear Protect your wooden floor from scratches by being mindful of your footwear when you walk over it. Boots and high heels are the worst culprits for leaving scratches and indentations in your floor, so you should always get into the habit of removing your shoes when you come home. Obviously, you can’t expect guests to remove their shoes when they come into your home, so having area rugs or runners in high traffic areas can help to prevent some damage. Never walk over your newly re-varnished floor in anything other than fluffy socks for at least 24 hours after it has drie Felt pads on furniture Moving furniture around to redecorate, clean or make room for new pieces (or a Christmas tree in December), can result in scratched floors. The solution – add felt pads to the bottom of your heavy furniture to prevent deep scores. These felt pads are easy to apply and last for ages – and they’re extremely cheap so it’s a simple and extremely effective way to prevent unsightly damage to your wooden floor. Care when cleaning Taking care of a wooden floor is very simple – it’s one of the easiest flooring types to keep clean, which is why it’s such a popular choice for many homes. You do however need to have the right kit on hand for cleaning – never use a hard-bristled brush to scrub your floor and if you use a mop, be careful not to push too hard otherwise you could end up scratching your floor. Toys & small children If you have young children, you’ll know that their toys can be a hazard to your floor. The best way to prevent these scratches is to have a playmat which you can roll up when not in use to protect your floor, and their little knees while they play. Also try not to drag toyboxes across the floor, and add felt pads to the bottom of these too. Refinishing your floor Sometimes deep scratches in your floor are unavoidable, and if you have a solid wood floor you may want to consider sanding it and re-varnishing it to restore it to its former lustre. E D I love the way that you say what you think, yet without being at all rude, and totally funny....... it's an art form, and I look forward to your comments, they cheer me up. I always worried about what people will think and if i've said the right thing, the wrong thing etc............it can make you a bit anxious and I really wish I could stop doing it. Maybe a New Year's resolution coming?? I think your ideas would work although not sure how easy/expensive it would be to add the new loo as your plumbing seems to be at the front? Would you move the door back from the hall? If so, you could use that space for coats and remove the wall in the existing cloakroom to make that wider. Or my brother had a similar space and his original idea was to use it for wine storage with crittall doors. I’d remove the awning but not sure you need to modernise? I like OnePlans idea, how much space do you actually have there? My only thought is that the kitchen wall is a bit bare. Not sure how you’d feel about continuing the cladding? Bad photoshops but I’ve done a half wall and the full wall
