Renovating Design Dilemma

Steel Beam Sizes?

I have 2 architects telling me I need 2 different size beams for my 10m single story extension, one says I need a 30cm (h), the other says 60cm(h), where or how can I decide which one is correct (60cm will show massively, not ideal)?

The decision rests with a structural engineer. They will size the beam based on load required to support the span and scheme you are looking to create. If the architect hasn’t appointed one on your behalf then you would have to find one.

I agree with the above post. We've just had a huge RSJ inserted and calculations were obtained through a structural engineer.

I wouldn’t paint it the same colour as the steel. You are right, it would be too much. If you look at the room from the windows, the horizontal lines are the colour of your walls and the vertical lines are black/anthracite. To keep the balance, I would paint the beam the same colour as the walls. Otherwise you will have a grid effect which will detract from your beautiful plywood ceiling. Hello, looking to do some MODEST remedial work in the loft to make it safe & compliant with building regs, and the biggest question is whether there in an alternative to large steel beams to support floor? Thinking of using thick rebar on every second or third beam, for example, but don't know if that is compliant. Which prof service would do an inspect, report and recommendation to inform what works need doing? Thank you Lee

Hi everyone, I'm not sure if anyone would be able to make any suggestions regarding this, but I thought I'd ask. I'm in the process of contacting a few structural engineers, but I can't get in touch with the original person who did my plans for me (which was about 2 years ago, unfortunately I had to put my plans on hold), so I may have to start from scratch, hence my post on here. I've attached 3 images. Top - shows the original plan with my pencil marks over showing the changes I want to make. The red line shows the current wall that I want to retain. The wall just to the left was a stud wall that was proposed to be put in its place, as originally I was going to take out the load bearing wall in red. The green dots represent steels that were going to be built in to the stud wall to support the beams going across the room the other way. Middle - shows this just zoomed in Bottom - shows the layout I want to acheive. However, I don't think I can pull the wall back that far as it doesn't tie in with the beam going the other way. As you can tell, I was just thinking about the layout and not the structural requirements! Has anyone completed a renovation similar to this? What are my options? Any advice gratefully received. As mentioned, I'm trying to get in touch with the original engineer but thought I'd try my luck on here just in case anyone has that kind of background. Thanks.

This seems quite a big difference in sizes. Maybe worth posting in another architectural forum.

On a separate note, If you need steel beams (RSJ's) we are able to fabricate/cut to any size. We are also able to deliver.

agree with first post. we are just doing this ourselves and it's the structural engineer that makes this call not the architect.
