Comments (2)When the kitchen is the heart of the home it can really get you down when it's in desperate need of updating. From your ideasbook it looks like you are leaning towards a fresh neutral shaker style kitchen, the same as you had before and if that's what you love why mess with it. I would say think a little about what works well with the style of house as well and try and get something that fits well with it. This means it not only sits well with the architecture of the building but when you came to sell doesn't jar with future purchasers. A kitchen is a big investment so it best it works hard for you both while you own it and when you came to sell. If you want it just for yourself and aren't worried about future buyers then maybe a color on your units would bring a fresh edge to something you already love. Comments (28)As an owner of a large glass kitchen table (octagonal btw) I would not recommend getting one! Especially if you have children. Octagonal shape is great as every guest gets a side, but glass shows fingerprints, even little dust etc. and underneath the table top as well! Harder to clean too. Comments (11)I had a ushaped kitchen with peninsula in previous house as no room for island. I never felt stuck behind it- in fact i liked the fact that guests and kids were more likely to stay on the dining side out of my way! I now have an island as I'm stuck with the kitchen in the house we bought, and it drives me a bit crazy when there are lots of people in the kitchen as they all gather around the island and get in the way! I think your plan is pretty good except for oven position. I think it's really far from your workspace, and also I'd question the wisdom of having the oven beside the fridge? Maybe a tall larder cupboard in this position, and a range style cooker with double oven beneath? Or move the hob to the peninsula and put double oven somewhere along that wall?...See More

6 years agoGo for Farrow and Ball eggshell if you don’t want shabby chic, their colours are amazing and wipeable which is important, chalk paint is difficult to scrub clean, if you haven’t done much painting I would get the paint and leave it to the professionals, could also consider having the kitchen sprayed by a car body shop company for a flawless finish

6 years agoI agree with all above, it's not so much hard work as technically challenging. Painting a whole kitchen ( not just the door fronts / drawers ) is difficult. There would be no sanding involved as the units come bare wood presumably ready to paint. However, it would require priming and painting. A gloss roller gives a much more uniform look, definitely more than two coats though, as the coats go on thin, then you build and build to get the depth of colour and coating right. You also have to do end panels, cornicing etc. Also, possibly the struts where the cupboard doors close to. Basically, all the frames too. Getting even coats on all of those things is not for the faint hearted. Spray painting by a professional is great, but it would really need to be done prior to putting it in. Infact any painting would be better done before placing in situ if possible. Then touch up at the end.
If you do want to try this yourself, i'd highly recommend a satinwood finish for longevity. Also , the Wood and Metal paint at Valspar ( B&Q ) - NOT EGGSHELL - it's not hard wearing enough for a kitchen.
We spray painted our own kitchen. - Also, not for the faint hearted - and definitely not if you've not sprayed before. It took over 40 cans, but was worth it. It's now been done for around 6-7 years and is still looking good. We recently decorated around it for a second time, changed the wall coverings, internal doors etc
