I plan to paint my 'new' kitchen and need advice.

Hi, we are ordering a new kitchen from Handmade Kitchens of Christchurch. the units come unpainted, they are made up of tulipwood and MDF. I have never tried painting furniture before but reading so many blogs and posts by people who have painted their own kitchens and saved a fortune I am tempted to paint my own kitchen. I am aware it is hard work, sanding, soap wash, priming, and 2 coats and I'm not shy of hard work at all. However, the look I want to achieve is something like you would see in a Tom Howley, Devol and Shaker kitchen Co. and not a shabby chic one, so please tell me if this is doable or should I not risk it and go for a professional painter?
