Stair renovation ideas needed

I'm currently renovatiing my whole house and its at the back to brick stage. I haven't addressed the stairs though. I'm appreciating them a little more today than previously but need help with renovation ideas. They creek a lot and that definitely needs addressing. Any ideas? I want to maintain a mid-century industrial look and do like the combination of oak and stool but any ideas welcome.

Hmm, definitely a glass balustrades would fit. We did similar kind of work recently.

I honestly can't tell from the picture ( and did try blowing it up ) what the staircase is made from. Is it Tile or block board with a metal trim? - I think it's something with a metal trim. Anyway, It will need amending as you can't paint tiles or block board and make them look nice and the metal trim has to go. Pretty much the only option is a full width carpet. Remove one of the hand rails, you don't need two. I presume you're putting plaster board up as painted brickwork indoors is not really ideal and it's not insulated, so if one of your walls is an outside wall, which is quite normal on a staircase, you'll need insulating board to keep the warmth in.

Wow - I can see that you have some lovely ideas - however, if you want to design this sort of renovation yourself, you will need to research building regs to make sure your plan is compliant (as they are mandatory here in UK, not optional) - also I’d suggest you look up fire regs too as you will need to protect your family’s route out in the case of an emergency. Then I’d suggest you research opening sunrooms into the main part of the house that will be under thermal values part of building regs and then look into walkway spaces required in a kitchen and space required infront of an appliance and then look at informal planning guides for distance of table to wall and best equation for choosing the right size tv for the distance away you’ll be seated. Add to that some knowledge of the heat produced by the gas fire and how heat rises and there for it might melt your tv which would be a fire risk. ... Hope I haven’t bored you with all that ! With a little bit of research and some drawing changes - maybe a few more days required . Then it will be lovely AND safe for you and your family !

Chris. I think your tiles are a really nice choice and they will give you the classy feel that you want. Either format will be fine but the rectangular tiles fitted vertically will give the impression of greater height to the room. Clearly it’s a matter of personal choice but I think that the dark grey accents cheapen the class of the tiles and bring the room in. If you wanted to go for a contrast, maybe the vanity unit in a dark wood effect would look more classy. My other thought is that the room is maybe not big enough for the shower set up as you have it here. I think that water will splash beyond the screen and in front of the toilet. My thoughts are keep the open shower screen but go with a plain white porcelain shower tray with a slightly raised lip or keep the flooring consistent and opt for a frameless glass door which will keep the water in. Could be just me but I like to splash a bit in the shower and I think you’ll end up with water in front of your loo. Best of luck with the renovation. It’s going to look great.

Hi Natasha

Depends how modern or traditional you want the room to be and in keeping with the rest of the house I would recommend stand off fixings personally as there very minimalistic and if your keeping the staircase open as it is now this would be the best option, you can also fit a fletch plate and clad over it which would hide the fixings under the cladding.
