Will laminate wood always look cheap?
Comments (20)Hi everyone No decisions yet, its effectively like an insurance job so we are still waiting on a decision. I would love hardwood flooring but the supplier doesn't stock hardwood only laminate, carpet and vinyl. I'd like to put the same in both affected rooms (dining room currently carpeted and kitchen currently vinyl) and also in the den which is next to the kitchen so it seems like the laminate might be our best option. No karndean/Amtico type options either. In an ideal world we would have the hardwood but then we would have to make a contribution to the cost. Normally not a problem but I am leaving my job as a partner in a large law firm this week to set up on my own (very scary!) and so we are tightening the purse strings for a few months in case things don't work out!...See MoreWhat do you think I should do about this old dresser?
Comments (25)wow stellahome, what a grand house and entrance! I'm intrigued! Do you have many original features left in the house? servant bells maybe? :) Post some pictures for us! I am very familiar with lassco, in fact I currently live 5 mins away from there, and pop in often, they have many wonderful items which really enhance an old house. Took a couple of more pictures today of the dresser, as even though it looks very worn, look at the dovetail joint details! They certainly don't make them like this anymore (unless you pay a hefty price for it!)...See MoreWhat are you glad you put in your kitchen, and what can you do without
Comments (123)Thank you for everyone's comments, had no idea this thread would prove so popular when I started it. We are plastering this week and we have finally bought most things for the kitchen. I did find some real 'finds' though if anyone is looking. Not sure where you are based, but regarding electrical goods we researched all our own and narrowed down our list, and once we had that we looked online for the best prices for each appliance. Instead of buying from lots of different places we took it to Bentalls, who not only matched, but also cost us less, and beat some online prices with a good 'deal' price they also then will hold on to them until you need them, but if anything goes wrong you have 'bentalls' rather than several online dealers to return items to. RDO Appliances also do this if there is one near you, but i'd advise you to research prices first. Another thing we found was inserts for the kitchens. Through our kitchen supplier these were expensive, bin inserts, pull out drawers, pull out larders, even the pop up sockets, sourced seperately through ebay and online we managed to save quite a lot of money by doing this, so our fitter will still have the right things on the day, but we are not getting the inserts from the supplier. What else..... erm kitchen worktop, unbelievably the exact same worktop, same material, same cut outs etc.. same sizes differed between suppliers by 3k! so do shop around for your quartz and granite....See MoreHelp need urgent advice on laminate as carpenter due back in morning
Comments (19)Ah Ribena, sorry to not update before! I think I am still a little traumatised :-) I gave the carpenter strict instructions to do the final room in a staggered format. He even laid out a couple of rows and I was certain he understood what I meant. Then to my horror I saw the job later when he had done 2/3 and the joins were in alignment again!!! Not every other row as before but every third. My heart sank and I had to get him to redo it the next day, and I am the one who has to foot this mistake! I wasted close to £160 for an extra day of labour. He has redone it although there are some pattern repeats right next to each other! He works for a friend of my family so it is awkward. I have covered over the joins in the other bedroom with rugs but I still dislike it. He said it would probably take him half a day to redo it so another £80. Really not sure which way to go Also after all that, I am not sure I like the laminate anyway which is really frustrating, wish I had the budget to have gone for engineered wood. I chose a smooth Quick Step (Impressive range so around £21 a sq m) in oak to try and match the look of real parquet I have in the hallway. Wish I had got a more pronounced grain now! Now wondering what style of rug can put down to soften it. Have a kingsize in there and wondering whether to put two separate rugs down side or one large one underneath? Sorry, you did ask!!!...See Moredesign novice
